I realize you folks are primarily concerned with A-Bodies and my 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 Slant Six is a B-Body but maybe you can help me with this problem which should be common across A and B. I thank you in advance!

Last evening I was touring around in my "new" survivor beauty (that I got 6 days ago) and noticing that the odometer was about to roll over to 89000.0. As it "tried" to do that the speedometer started bouncing and clicking and I noticed that the odometer had stopped. I figure that the odometer bound up in trying to roll over those 5 digits (too much torque needed?) and the speedometer cable was slipping causing the clicking and bouncing. Hmmm, not good to keep going. This morning I unhooked the top end of the speedometer cable to stop the bouncing and clicking and maybe prevent further damage. I don't know if the odometer gear is broken or just stuck. For the moment (so I can continue to drive it) I'm leaving the cable off. I set up a Garmin GPS so I have an interim "speedometer" and "odometer".

I presume I will have to remove the instrument cluster, which does not look too hard in the shop manual, and either fix or replace the odometer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Any ideas of where to get an odometer or donor instrument cluster would also be greatly appreciated.

If this topic is too B-Body-specific, please let me know. If there is another forum you suggest for B-Body issues, please let me know.

Jon

Jon you are more than welcome here! We have no A-Body, truck, B-body ....etc. As long as you have a Slant 6 your in! :D

It may be that the cable got tight in the housing?

I think it must be the odometer binding up. Just before the problem the speedo was running quietly and smoothly. When I get the odo figured out and fixed, then I'll clean up and lube the cable too.
