Dear Slanters,

I thought some folks might be interested that Brian Mimken and I will be bring our cars (74 Duster/Demon and 66 Valiant) to Carolina Motorsports Park roadcourse in Kershaw, SC for a track weekend with NASA.

https://www.nasaproracing.com/events/2962

This is a fun roadcourse that both of us have run before. I ran this with the Project V Valiant in ~ 2005, with a much milder motor and suspension, and a funky black/white "paintjob". Brian and I have both run it in other cars a few times since then, including me in LeMons Racing with Jason Ernst's Slant 6-powered BMW and 1964 Valiant.

If anyone would like to join us, please respond here. We will camp at the track. We'll treat you to dinner and drinks (at least) if you decide to come out!

I will be trying out different combinations of tires, carbs, and probably a few other mechanical variants, as this is the first time Project V has been on a roadcourse since about 2007...

Best,
Lou

Thanks for sharing Lou,

If you guys are planning something like this next year please include me in the preliminary discussions.

I cant come this year, as I still need to sort stuff and build a car, but I hope to join the fun soon.

What kind of driver grear and tech considerations are there for something like this compared to drag racing?

Thanks, Greg. Will definitely loop you in next time.

More car inspection, including before you get to the track and at the track. Every hosting body has their own set of safety rules, but basically things are more stringent than dragstrips. Windows DOWN during track time. Good seatbelts. If not a stock fuel tank, then much more expensive 2-layer fuel cells. Fire extinguisher within easy reach of the driver held down with a metal bracket...

Hmm why do dragstrips want windows up and roadcorsed down?

I would guess dragstrips are more worried about flying debris like engine parts. I think on a roadcourse they are expecting you to roll over, so broken glass flying at you during that event would be bad.

Let us know how things turn out.

I will be camping with the family, but living vicariously through the NASA slant 6 weekend.

Prepping for this a little every day... I took the car on a 15-20 min beat lap last night. It is a bit tail happy with the new stiffer rear springs, even with nominally stickier tires on the back. I'll make some tire changes and maybe try the swaybar, but we'll see how much I get done.

I have my pass seat bracket cleaned and painted, and the seat ready to go in, just in case I want/need passengers. They put me in "HPDE 3" run group, which does not require an instructor and has point-by passing everywhere on the track. Maybe someone will want a ride. New harnesses arrived.

I think I need to improve my breather situation as it is spitting some oil on the valve cover when I am winding the motor all over the place. I will probably make some sort of remote breather with a 90 deg bend so oil can run back down into the valve cover. There is no baffle on this fabricated aluminum valve cover.

Hopefully on Saturday or Sunday I can do a hillclimb up to Mountain Lake (7 mi, 2000 ft gain) to do a burn test on everything. The car feels wicked and fun, but I am unsure about heat, leaks, etc for engine and trans under sustained laps.

Looking forward to it...

Lou

Wish I could join you folks, as a spectator, but that weekend is our big Mopar show, and swap meet.

Good luck Lou. From what I've seen of your work, I'll bet the car performs like a champ!

Fixed overflow hose and bottle on Project V and kept loading stuff into the van. Received new fat sticky tires for rear - 255/40-17 Bridgestone RE-71R.

Will meet Brian M at Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) around 9 PM tomorrow eve. Drove the V out to Oliver's Automotive yesterday to get the pre-track tech inspection/sign off. All is well. Printed the weekend schedule... I expect to do a fair bit of wrenching at the track. 40 X 20 min sessions/day and time in between for tuning/tweaking/fixing. Weather looks beautiful.
