As some already know, Rob 'Mater" Simmons has purchased a Duster here in 'kal-i-forn-i-a and plans to fly out, pick-up the car and drive it back to 'Ken-tuckeee...
Oh, He wants to do some 'racin' with them Killer Bees along the way.
(see this post for details: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... &start=255 )

So... Knowing how helpful all the .org member are with stuff like this, I thought I'd start a message thread to give ol' Rob some helpful hints on what to plan, bring and work to do on the car, to ensure that he (and his son Chase) have a good (safe) road trip.

See this thread as a "primer" for how to "plan & prep" an old car for a trip:
http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43575

So the big difference with this car, it needs to be a "fly-in, pick-up, Race & drive home" deal.

Comments like: "What are you thinking" & "No problem, it's a SL6..." are OK but what he really needs are the "do this & don't do that" kinda stuff.

What do we know about the car? Brakes, fuel delivery and cooling system top my list. Then there are tires and electrical problems. :D

How far to your first stop? If it's more than a couple hundred miles, change the oil, and install a new fuel filter before you leave.

Coolant check. Transmission check. If it's shifting soft, solve that before driving that first mile. Even if you have to wire it back.

First stop, new tranny filter, fluid and band adjust.

I've still got a fuel tank somewhere around here if filters start plugging up. Also got some frictions, and probably a band or two.

It's a long haul north to Woodburn. If the car starts acting up, give me a call. Trailer can be ready in short order.

IRWIPI!

Josh is on top of things, I think that he should get a spare dual ballast resistor "just in case", and have a spare emergency tool set in the trunk.
A couple jugs of water wouldn't hurt just in case during the trip. When he gets here we can take a look at his distributor and make sure everything is jake, if something's broke I should have spares in the magic shed "just in case".

So when he gets to the track, you think we ought to take the sawzall to his noodle pipe so he can drop a second or two in the 1/4?

Heck, if he just loses the bumper shocks he'll gain some mpg and .5 sec ET....If we cut the tailpipe below the driver's side pan, and install a #60 jet in the 1945 and adjust the distributor some, he might become dangerous in the 18 sec group....

Sounds like old skool fun.

I was just telling some of my scientist friends yesterday that I probably have had car failures and had to pull over and fix something at the side of the road... HUNDREDS of times... Could even be over a 1000. Mostly, this was due to "experiments" I tried on the cars. Their eyes got big. I told them that's how I learned how to build stuff.

I still enjoy this mode of driving from time to time. How many times have I been towed due to such a failure? Once.

Lou

Looks like we need to start some lists...
How about these catagories: Road Prep, Racing Prep, Tools, Parts and Supplies and "People" Travel Stuff.
The first 3 groups are things for the car, the last group is for the "carbon based" operators of the vehicle.
Last group first:

7. Supply of Mail Pouch or RedMan.
8. Roll or three of toilet paper.
9. Kentuckian / English Dictionary.
10. Bring that best friend (Coon Hound).
11. 1/8 of Hash
12. Sleeping bags
13. Ibuprofen
14. Ditty Bags (Personal toiletries, etc.  )

Road "Prep" (Car)
1. Current Tags & Insurance
2. Oil Change.
3. Cooling System Flush & Check.
4. Brake System Check
5. Fuel Filter

Racing "Prep" (Car)
1. Free Flowing Exhaust. (Sawsall)
2. Lighten the Vehicle. (Hole Saw)

Thanks Doc and others (Not you Cookie! :P  )

The car was a "Little Old Ladies" for most of its life and now belongs to a college student. It has been his daily driver until recently.

I'll check things over when we get there (Stockton, CA) before we start heading North to Paradise, CA where we will hang out with Edd & PJ Jesiolowski before heading up to Woodburn, OR for the race.

I'm looking for ideas on a few things to see/do with Chase along the way.

I will have a temporary Kentucky plate with me for the drive back. I already checked with DMV.

The airline would probably raise an eyebrow at stuff like ballast resistor, starter solenoid, etc., so I'll look for those things on the California side. Maybe I should post a "Parts Wanted" ad... :?

This is going to be Chase's first car and daily driver, so no hack saws or hole saws...

It currently has headers and Cherry Bombs on it, but Old Car Scott was kind enough to check the car out for me and wants the headers. So, it will likely have a stock exhaust back on it when we get there to drive it back.

Here's the link to the thread about finding the car: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48093

We're really looking forward to this! :D :D

OK... We can't "go chopping" on the car so I will change the list.
Oh... and yes, once we have all the ideas and "to-do's" we can pull a shopping list together and see "who has what".

Thanks Doc!

I wish Sunnyvale wasn't in the wrong direction for this trip. I kinda wanted to scout out that '62 Valiant wagon for next year's road trip.
