I got the board up from the August backup. Most forums are locked until I can see if I can get a newer backup. Hey, it only took about 30 hours!

I can't seem to get a newer phpBB installed on GoDaddy, but if I can, I will try to upgrade.

Update: The board is unlocked and active as of 11/14/17.

It does look a lot like the old board. Good work.

Some of the new board’s features (which I think would be useful) don’t appear. The obvious one is the Quick Links button on the upper left corner. I think the old board disabled some features of v2 (like the ability to select the direct URL of a post). This makes it a lot more work to refer to a specific post.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about making the new board look exactly the same as the old board. Maintaining a similar color scheme and header is all you would need to have brand consistency. Updates to the look might even be welcomed by the membership.

Frank,

Regarding the Quick Links, I don't see anything in the upper-left corner. The upper right has "You have no new messages", "View posts since last visit", "View unanswered posts", and "Mark all forums read". Are these the ones you are referring to? Or do you mean the Home, Forum Index, Profile, etc. buttons under the logo? (I was going to look into putting some buttons up if I can figure it out.)

Looks good, Chuck! I will have to get used tp the new look, but I figure a makeover after 15+ years is okay. Thanks for getting this place back up and running!

I also like the ability to attach files now.

Do we still need/want the old blue buttons under the logo?
Home, Forum Index, Profile, etc? Most of these items are elsewhere on the page but I am thinking about removing them and using our original buttons. (I put some of them in just to see if I could!)

Please comment.

The new board is now active. You can report problems in this thread.

Thank you Chuck for getting the site back up and running! It might take a bit to get used to it with the new look, but it is nice to have it back up!

Having looked a bit closer this morning, it looks like you've taken the drop-down items in the v3.11.1 Quick Links button and added individual links to each one. It also looks the forum has regained the ability to get the direct link of a specific post.

I think you've succeeded in translating the old site's look to the new forum. The only thing I can suggest now is to add some BBCode functionality like the ability to embed YouTube videos.
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/bbcode/youtube/

Once you get a new home for the forum, I would also suggest that you get an adsense account and run a couple of ads. I use the now-unsupported cece74/adsense extension but it looks this is the official ad extension:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/ads/

These might be useful to fight spammers:

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... orum_spam/

RE: The Old Blue Buttons

I use them to navigate, but I am slow to adopt new habits. If they aren't used by many people or are a pain to keep active, I can live happily without them and just retrain myself.

They are easy to put back in. Most of them have a link somewhere else on the board, so if I added the buttons, I also thought about removing the stock links. That takes a but more work though.

Frank, thanks for the suggestions. I would really like to have a custom registration form that would allow us to ask for the user's car info as we do now. If it was custom, we could make it so that the form could not be submitted if that field was left out. We need a PHP/phpBB coder for that.

Looks like you can readily link to specific posts by right-clicking the red text that appears after Post subject: at the top of each individual post. For example, see here for a link to a specific post in a thread (search results also contain "Jump to post" text which can be right-clicked to obtain the link for that specific post).

Chuck, it looks like the contents of the database (up through Aug 27) made the move except for sticky threads, which did not—either as stickies or as regular posts. For example, there doesn't appear to be a new-board equivalent of this post or this one or this one, all of which were stickies on the old board. Looks like they're still there as stickies on the old board; maybe that will make them easier to round up and duplicate here on the new board.

(Last thing I did before the old board went down was send a PM to Rob Simmons asking if this post could be unlocked long enough for me to update a piece of the technical info in it…then the board went kaboom, guess it was my fault! )

Hold down the CTRL key and press the plus (+) key on the numeric keypad. This will increase the font size in any browser window.
