Saw this in the Sept Popular Science. Claims to increase milage 10-20%, eliminate knock, run cooler all with no power loss - just by making some groves in combustion chamber. See the slideshow.
would be intersting to try on an older head.
here is the web page

Post subject:  i seen it also

i saw this article a few months back and i want to try it out on a motorcycle engine, (cheaper and easier to swap) i have been looking for one i can sacrifice for the sake of science, crazy idea but it looks like it might work. what do the guru's of engineering here think?, any input doc dodge?

Yeah... that would be a real sweet deal.
Cleaner running
Better mileage
Maintains power

what would be the doc's output on this?

hmm it looks good, but it seems like that would DECREASE the burn efficency, like fuel would get caught in the grooves and not completely burn.

i wonder what someone who knows would say ( pssst doc )

Very interesting, but it wouldn't work on a stock slant since it requires a quench head which the slant doesn't have. Other than that, I need details! How deep are the grooves and are they just cut radiating out from the spark plug?

I can also see why the big companies aren't interested since they spent millions on cylinder head and injector designs to accomplish the same goal. The modern approach is to keep the rich mixtures in the center of the combustion chamber around the spark plug and not have rich mixtures trapped out around the edges of the chamber.

Y'know, I remember when Popular Science did just what its name implies: published scientific information in a way that the general population could understand.

Over the last decade or so, the magazine has done what was necessary for it to survive in a time when people are turning away from magazines and going online instead: It has dropped all pretense of presenting actual science, and has instead gone to this kind of happy-crappy, rags-to-riches, undiscovered-Truths-from-uneducated-guy-in-India romantic BS.

I miss the old Popular Science. It had actual facts in it.

C'mon, people, think for a minute. People have been fraudulently claiming to have invented a way to make any engine put out more power on less fuel and with less emissions for about a century now. This kind of "one size fits all" magic jest ain't real.

Something to think about before you haul out the Dremel tool and start messing up cylinder heads.

The more I had studied the slant six head the more I agree that it wouldn't work. Oh well... if nothing else it made some wheels turn. Maybe a lawnmower than :D
