I pulled my engine and am about to start the rebuild. I want to keep it naturally aspirated but do all the "good stuff". Clifford wants $1195 for a reworked head. This seems kinda high to me.

If I have a local shop do the work, what do I tell them I want? I know - bigger heads and porting and blending (don't really know what blending means) shaving of head and new springs and what else.

I doubt if any shops in my area (Amarillo TX) have much experience with performance mods to the slant 6. What exactly would I tell them that I need done? I am shooting for 9.5-10 compression

Welcome to the forum. Dont spend the money with Clifford. Lets here about your car and what you want to do with it first. Then we can give you some advice.

Welcome to the site :D . A machine shop worth it's salt should be able to do any head on any engine. The vast knowledge needs to come in when doing a head for racing. If you want 10.1/1 to 10.25/1 and you are rebuilding the whole engine you can use the K-1 rods and wiseco pistion kit and that only requires a clean up of the head and deck surface. Most guys use 300 ford L6 valves in their head or engine builder valves(off ebay). Ferrea makes good valves to but what ever route you go make sure the valves are unshrouded in the head. Some guys run 11/32 valve stems and others stock 3/8's it depends on the budget really.

Hi and welcome. I asked the same question when I joined this site....heres a link. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ht=#183917

From what I have gathered the clifford heads are not so much ported just "cleaned up" but I dunno as I have never seen one.

The engnbldr valves are spoken of highly so that might be a good start.

66aCUDA is right- watcha got & watcha wanna do?

The search function will reveal many gems hiding in this site.
:D

73 Duster. Building her with my son Cody who is 15 and is anxious to learn. What we want to end up with is a really nice car that will surprise a bunch of v-8s.
Will probably take her to the drags from time to time but we want to have decent street manners and run on pump gas.
Automatic tranny. Plan to change the TC to a 3000 or so.

I appreciate the replies. Plan to use the Clifford intake with the water passage. And Clifford exhaust manifolds. Holley 390. Electric fan.

What is the source for the k-1 rods and wiseco pistons? That sounds like a good route.

I would suggest Dutra Duals for the exhaust, an Offy intake, the 390 is probably OK for street/occasional strip use, one of the Erson cam profiles listed elsewhere on this site, larger valves, and some head milling and port cleanup work.

Lots of people have been burned pretty bad by Clifford lately. I would stay away from them.

What about a Aussie Hurricane manifold? There is one on Ebay right now. This car probably could get by without a manifold heater. It will basically be a nice weather driver.
Wondering about cams. The Erson site shows one that is a step above the RV. Is that enough? The next one up shows that it is not very good with an auto tranny.

I have no experience with the aussie intakes, but some of the members on the board have tried them out. Do a search.

Also, some of the members on the board have worked with Erson to develop some nice slant six specific cam profiles. Do a search to find the thread.

Guys?.....If he's in Amarillo, I wonder how bad it would be to ship his head to Mike Jeffries for a going-over?
That's what I plan to do when that time comes.

Roger

Is Mike Jeffries in the business of doing head work? Where is he located and what would he charge?

The Aussie intakes are good. We just finished a group buy on them. However if you will wait til the 1st of Sept we will have another one. You can aslo get head gaskets and manifold gaskets with this buy.
I would reccomend the Erson 280/270 RDP cam. It has good street manners and will really surprise you.
If your old cam is in good shape you can have it reground. That will save some cash. Erson has springs, lock, retainers and lifters for this cam.
Engine Builder has 1.70/1.44 3/8 stem valves that will work great on our head.
Dont go with "Ford 300" valves unless you are boring at least .060 or more.
ASK Specfic questions and read.
We can help you have fun and spend your money wisely,
Frank

In my experience there is always a trade-off between drag strip suspension with high RPM power, and good road handling and torque. Personally, I don't need a lot of top end, so I set up for MPG as well as cornering ability. The Dutra duals mentioned above are a favorite here, and the Aussie manifolds have been developed with the help of people on this site, so you needn't deal with the expense and frustration of Clifford. I was short on ignition/tuning experience, so I had my distributor rebuilt/recurved by Don at FBO, http://www.4secondsflat.com who was very helpful. Brakes are another concern when adding a lot of power, especially if the kid is going to drive it when he comes of age.

What would limit the 390 holley?
Craftsman truck series engines make 650 hp with a 390 cfm carb.

The aussie and Offy intakes look like what I want. The Dutra Duals with the heat riser would appear to have no use with one of these. I am not sure I want to mess with the problems of the Dual Dutra Duals.

Is Clifford really that bad? Their exhaust manifolds look pretty good to me.
