I took the main jet out of the original (I think) Holley 1945 carb from the D150 and the only numbers I can find on it are "289". If I understand Holley part numbers correctly that would translate to 122-89 meaning a size 89 jet. That can't be right. What am I missing? Unfortunately when I try to search the web for the answer all of the results pertain to Ford stuff.

The reason for this adventure in the first place is that the truck in the sig is getting 10 MPG at best, rolling 5-60 MPH in 25 seconds, plugs are reading towards the lean side (yellowish tan glaze), no pinging that I can hear with base timing at 14*, generally can't get out of it's own way, OK acceleration for the first quarter/half throttle, will barely spin a tire in gravel.

At this rate I might as well drop a big block in it. Similar MPG and a helluva lot more fun.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is that a remanufactured carb? I have a Reman 1945 and when I got it I took it apart to see what jet size it had. Guess what it had a #88 in it.

You can try setting the timing to 10 or 12. Check the timing curve.

Thanks for the responses!

So here's some more to the story. The truck originally had ESC when I got it in March of this year. The "original" carb (#1) was sitting in the cab and a replacement carb (#2) was in a box from the reman company Uremco. It was purchased at Autozone or Advance by a PO. Both of these carbs are designed to work with ESC. I converted the truck to HEI using Dan's instructions and purchased an Economaster carb (#3) and Autoline #619 distributor (against Dan's sage advice). I know very little about the distributor but that is another story.

Carb #1: 4287015 9762 0192 8R 5785 ink stamped with 4002???6. May be the original carb. PO claimed he averaged 22 MPG with mixed driving when it was his DD. He bought it in 2001 and it was his DD until 2009 then it was basically a secondary/farm truck. This carb had a size 89 jet in it.

Carb #2: Uremco reman 5-5207. 4213711 9132 2760. Had a size 66 jet in it. The jet did not have Holley numbers on it and looked like a knock off.

Carb #3: Economaster reman. 9731 AAA 1443 8R 5147B ink stamped 69???301. Had a number 622 jet in it. Oddly the 2nd 2 was stamped upside down. Currently on the truck with the 89 jet in it.

Timing has been set to 11* BTDC. Although switching to an to the 89 jet seems to run contrary to conventional wisdom and the 622 jet would seem to be the "correct" jet the truck seemed to be running lean even with the idle mix screw back out 4 turns. Plugs were a yellowish tan and looked a bit glazed. They are NGK UR5 plugs gapped to .045. The truck seems to have a tiny bit more power with the jet change and I haven't noticed any pinging. Mid range seems to need a bit less pedal to achieve the same results on a road I have driven many times in the truck.

I haven't noticed any pinging in general no matter what I do to timing etc. However the truck itself makes a lot of noise going down the road so it is kind of hard to hear.

Car Model:
Stock emission carb used close limit main jets. for example jet would be flow tested and then stamped. So a 68 jet flowed in middle of range of spec stamped with 2. 68 jet that flowed slightly lean of spec got a number 1. Jet flowed slightly rich of spec got a number 3. This can be confusing. A normal holley jet would be stamped 68 , close limit main stamped 681 or 682 or 683.

Wow man thanks for the info! The only jet that actually matched was carb #3 the Economaster. In general do the bottom of the numbers stamped on the jet face the threads?
