Hey, guys! I am in the process of purchasing a 1977 Dodge D100 with a 225 and a three on the tree. I'd really like to switch it out for an A833OD (if I can find one).

Has anyone done this before? Do I need to replace the clutch mechanism or can it be reused? I've heard that the later A230 bell-housing also worked for the A833. Is that true?

I'm very new at the truck game, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If it is a true 1975+ dual pattern high mount starter bellhousing and IBR hole is 5.125" then yes the A-833 OD will fit... you will know if it is an earlier 3 speed only bell if the IBR hole is 4.8"...
If it is a true 5.25" IBR A-230... the bearing retainer is $$$, as it allows the normal A-833 4 speed to be bolted into the OD bellhousings (which are easier to find....)...I would also look at the transmission to see if it's really an A-230, as Mopar had more HD 3 speeds available in that time period like the A-390 (and sometimes the A-250 as well)... look to see if the transmission has a top case access plate vs. the side plate with the shift levers like the A-833/A-230

Clutch, linkage, etc will all be the same...

That being said... you will have to watch the driveshaft yoke as the pattern went back and forth in the late 70's on spline count... most A-230's were 23 spline/A904 style yoke... but a few examples in 1978 had been seen with the 29 spline A-727 style yoke... like wise, most A-833OD (and truck models) were 29 spline/ A-727 type yoke, but I have a 1978 A-833 OD from a Volare that uses the 23 spline yoke...

The other consideration is tailshaft length, the 1975-1987 A-833OD for trucks have the long tailshaft like the B/E body transmissions with and offset plate for the shifter to fit the hump correctly... some short box trucks and vans have used the short tailshaft A-833OD (very few optioned that way), so if the A-230 is a long tailshaft, you will need to swap like for like or be faced with a driveshaft length change... vice-versa also hold for using the smaller length car transmission.

Things get a bit goofy if the truck had been coverted by a previous owner, and it may be a frankenstein under there...so hope it's all OEM..Good luck.

Thanks for the warning. I'll proceed with extreme caution. I had such notoriously bad luck with parts for the Flying Valiant, I'm not optimistic about my odds on the red truck. Appreciate the advice!

Is the speed worth using for racing?

I have the OD bell and a flywheel as I doubled up on my parts when I swapped my A390 out for the A833 OD. PM me if you would be interested.
