Can someone please tell me what I did wrong. I get a sound similar to a rod knocking whenever I depress the clutch pedal. The trans is freshly rebuilt, new clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing, and a new pilot bushing. The only thing that I can think of is that I did not put something together correctly. I used grade 8 socket head bolts for the pressure plate and torqued them to spec. I torqued the flywheel to 55 lbs. I am trying to remember, but I think that I only had one alignment dowel in the block and none in the bell but not quite sure.

I took a couple of short videos with my phone but do not know how to post them.

Thanks

Does the noise stop if you let the clutch out a little?

Yes, once I am moving or let the clutch out the knocking goes away.

Try moving the adjuster on the clutch fork so it does not push in quite so far. Obviously it still has to release the clutch but maybe it is pushing in to far.

If I take pressure off of it, it is very difficult to shift, and it still makes the noise.

Thought I had it fixed today, got home from work and put the truck back up on jack stands to pull the inspection cover and see if I could see anything suspious. Got is fired up and pressed the clutch and I did not hear any knocking at all. Looked up and saw a little wear mark on the crank about where the sheet metal could come in contact with it. The bell cover and motor tin were from a mid sixties belvedere I believe. I pulled the out my trusty tin snips and removed about 1/4" from the motor tin and reassembled it all and fired it up and ran through the gears listening for any knocking sounds. Nothing. I put it back on the ground to take it for another test drive with my 4 year old son and I did not hear anything right away but after about 10 miles and a stop at Menards to pick up some batteries I could really hear the knocking start to kick back in. This is starting to bug the hell out of me. Might have to pull the trans back out to see if I can tell what I did wrong.

Pull the cover and tin off and drive it without it on there. See if the noise is gone again. If it is then there is no reason to pull the transmission.

Well that was dumb on my part. When I installed the clutch and pressure plate I decided to take Doug Dutras advice and just use grade 8 socket head bolts to attach the pressure plate and being a safety geek I not only used locktite, but also used 5/16" split ring lock washers. The washer was rubbing on the clutch disk when the pressure plate was disengaged. It took me all of a half an hour to remove the washers and reinstall the bolts and torq them to spec. No more knocking sounds coming from the clutch area, just the normal rattles from a 40+ year old truck that needs a lot more TLC before I am ready to call this truck done. Again, thank you all for the input and help. Have a great rest of the weekend.
