Post subject: workin' on the turbo

Greetings from Pittsburgh!
Just wanted to show the latest progress on my slant6. I just installed two Holley model # 1920 carbs that I rebuilt and powder coated. (hey Doug, recognize the carbs?) I cast the adapters out of high strength ceramic. The air filter shown in the picture will soon be replaced with a IHI turbo that I'm rebuilding right now. Please be patient while your waiting for the site to load, there are a lot of PICS of other installs that I've done on there too. (You can see how a football player or some of our other rich customers spend their money!)
God bless America

I like the carb adaptor. Is the ceramic casting something that requires specialized equipment?

I made the mock (the form used to make a plaster mold) out of wood and body putty. It needs to be smooth and sealed with paint and then waxed. The 2 part mold is just plaster. The well dried plaster mold absorbs moisture out of the liquid ceramic or "slip." After about 15 minuets the excess slip is poured out leaving a hollow casting that is smooth, inside and out. Two hours later, it's dry enough to remove from the mold and needs to slowly air dry for about 2 weeks. It's fired in a kiln, glazed, and then refried. The mock needs to be about 8% or so (depending on thickness) than you want the finished casting to be because of shrinking. I reinforced the finished part with aluminum bars making it even more stable.
As far as equipment, the kiln is the only special thing needed. You could however take the part to a ceramic shop to get it fired. I bought my kiln about a year ago to melt soft metals for small castings. I'll post PICS of the mocks on my site.

Andrew,
Absolutely! I go to as many local shows as I can, custom car, car cruses, and custom car stereo. As the car is closer to being done, I seem to be traveling a little further! I'll let you know if I'm headed your way.
PS. I kinda figured you would appreciate what I've done and want to see it, just like I appreciate what you've done with your car and want to see your work!
Dan
