A friend has a 1966 Rambler American with 258 CI six-cylinder. Will the /6 A904 trans fit this engine? If not, will the A727? Will an A-body 8-3/4 rearend fit? I'm not hep to the Rambler stuff, but understand some of the Mopar components will bolt in. Would appreicate any help.

Rambler used the A904 and A727 trannies but they had there own unique case to bolt up to the engine. You could rebuild one using internal parts from a CC tranny.

Rambler's had Dana rear ends, an 8 3/4 would not be a drop in exchange. Certainly could be made to work, could be as simple as moving the spring peches to needing to cut the housing and axles down. Drive shaft mods would likely be required too.

Dave, thanks much for the information. I've passed it on to my friend at work.

Don't forget, AMC did'nt start using Torqueflights until '72. Up to that point they used Borg-Warner units. So, the mounting holes might be different for your friends year engine.

y'know something I saw at a local get together was a couple of guys who drag race an early hornet. They pulled the 232(?) I-6 and swapped in a Jeep 4.0L (same bolt pattern as the 258/232 they said), and used a 2wd Jeep 4spd Automatic (some "engineering required", similar to getting a truck A-833OD to fit a Valiant).
You might think about going that route for the tranny and that OD would really be a kick...

fuel to the fire...

My brother used to have Ramblers, some of the motors/trans wouldn't even swap from year to year. Then there was also Rambler's fully enclosed driveshaft.....Dennis
