at what rpm should i have full mechanical advance on a stock motor with the super six? i mostly shift between 2500 and 3000 rpm's. cruising rpm's in o.d. at 70mph is 2200.

-i know this is not very accurate but the only tach is inside the truck. i held the accelerator at 2000 rpm and noted the sound then reved the throttle slow until i had max mech advance(about 24 deg btdc without vac adv hooked up) and by sound i was well under 2000 rpms.

i can unhook the vacuum advance and drop to 6 deg btdc and it will still ping at wot and the engine feels sluggish. i'd like to keep it around 10-12 deg btdc, do i need to use two heavy springs.-----------------
welcome to my nightmare

Sounds like you need a heavy second spring with a shorter end loop. The factory sets the springs up so the light one does all the low RPM work untill the second heaver spring bottoms-out in it's end loop and slows down the mechanical advance for the higher RPMs.
Take a look to see how big the loop is on the second spring.

Can someone write a description of what the springs do in the distriburtor? What are the choices and what do they do? I'd love to know.
