Ok. I decided to go looking for the reason that I have no dash lights...THIS is my fuse panel. Seven slots....first five are 20A, last two are 3A. First of all, number one slot is empty (that may be the problem)... However, the first two slots only have the metal tabs on one end? Whhaaaaaatttt??

?????????????

(Please excuse the poor picture quality...I'll get a better one to post if need be).

Got the FSM (factory service manual) for your car? If not, you can download it here.

No dash lights: have you checked to make sure your tail lights work? If they do, then the fuse isn't the problem (dash lights on same fuse as tails to give the driver a visible warning if the tail light fuse blows). Problem could be a faulty headlamp switch (the dashboard lights are powered through a rheostat built into the headlamp switch) or could be as simple as all the bulbs being burned out. There are finally some legitimate, good-working LED retrofit bulbs for the dash. this is the white one, this is the amber one (I prefer these for max legibility with min glare) and this is the red one (for red warning lights). Relatively expensive, but you'll never have to replace them again and your dash light rheostat, wires, circuit board, etc will run nice and cool.

(er-ruh…you did turn the headlamp switch knob all the way counterclockwise to make sure the dash lights weren't just dimmed down…right?)

Dan is right- check your dash lights. I once bought a 72 Demon that had no dash lights. Everything was fine except the bulbs in the cluster were ALL burnt out. But the seller was nice enough to give me the flashlight she was using to watch her speed when she drove at night.

Hey Dan:

Yep, tail lights work...(don't laugh about the turning the knob thing, as I've pulled some good ones in my time), but yes, the lights aren't just dimmed. I'll figure it out, I'm sure. Maybe I'll buy a dedicated flashlight, lol.

Thanks for the links.
Shawn

So...those two first slots are weird. They should have both sets of metal tabs, right?

They may be for options your car does not have, hence no output side was installed.

Ah...hadn't thought of that. Thanks. Still no joy on the dash lights...I'm going to swap out all the fuses and see if that changes anything.

It won't, either the bulbs are toast or the wire windings on the light switch rheostat are toast... you can replace the bulbs and inspect the switch when you pull the instrument cluster to figure out the gas gauge....

Hey Reed: Guess what? I talked to the previous owner last night and when I mentioned the issue with the dash lights he basically told me that once his hip started to go (he's 80), he wasn't able to easily work on the car. He said, 'The bulbs may have burned out...one by one...and I never fixed them.' He then told me that he used a flashlight to check his speed!! lol. Same story as yours. SO - it looks like the likely culprit is bad bulbs. I changed the flasher module and got them working and, as well, the hi/low indicator seems to be fine. All other gauges are out.

There is one question I have though. On the back of the pull knobs for the lights and the wipers, I notice there is a small white bushing or grommet that came off when I was sniffing around the dash console. I'm worried that these may be damaged when I remove the knobs to get to the dash bulbs. Ever seen these around?

Cheers
Shawn

27 August, 2017:

Dash lights are now repaired. All the bulbs were burned out, most of the grounds were bad and some of the plastic cradles were broken. One power lead was bad also. Anyway, a local automotive electrical place took care of the issues.

Slowly beginning to chase down all the idiosyncrasies in the systems. She's starting to feel like mine now, lol.

Thanks for all the assistance!

Shawn

I'll answer that question, but not here. I'll answer it here where it actually belongs.
