When I bought my Lancer it was completely disassembled. It came with a squareback alt. I did not know it at the the time but it has one of the FLD terminals grounded. instead of a regular brush it has a brush with an extra large spade that is grounded to the case. I was told that this is for use with the old style regulator. I also have a dual field alt. from my 72 motor that is in bad shape but has the regular isolated type brushes. I have the newer style voltage regulator installed in the car. My question is can I remove the grounded style brush and replace it with the isolated style brush and regular size spade and then wire both fields?

If I understood you have no late type alternator with 2 wire terminals for field. And you like use it with old style "relay" or "solid state relay replacement" regulator. If so just connect the field wire to one terminal and make another wire which you connect from other field terminal to chassis (ground).

I am using a newer voltage regulator. I have a dual field squareback alternator. One of the fields is grounded from the factory. My question is can I replace the grounded brush with an isolated brush and wire both fields?

Yes, exactly. After you sway the brush holder I would measure with an ohm meter to make sure neither field terminal is shorted to the case.
