Hi all, I’ve got a Clark Cortez that apparently has had some work done (tummy tuck, rhinoplasty, etc ). There is no link from the exhaust manifold to the choke on the YH. Is there a part I should find to remedy this situation? Seems to start without issues although I haven’t run it in the winter, I might in the future sometime and want to reliably start the thing. Also want the choke throttle to open up once the exhaust has come up to temp.

Full disclosure; I’m just finishing up installing a Dutra dual setup with Oem manifold on the rear three ports, so there is a choke stove.

No, the YH uses either a manual choke or an integral (round black bakelite housing) automatic choke. It does not use a remote choke thermostat like the downdraft Slant-6 carbs.

Does the clark cortez use a standard one barrel intake?

No, it's a special intake.

There used to be pictures on this board. Not sure if any survived the board crashes over the years.

The YH has a threaded port below the choke throttle controller Bakelite thingy. There was nothing attached to it. I can add another pic of that but don’t want to over-do the pics as per the facs. Maybe this is more of a topic for a Corvair forum?

That threaded port is for the choke's hot air tube—different length version of the same tube that goes to the throttle body in this system.

The other interesting thing about this intake is the plate that bolts to the regular top-surface carb mount pad. It's not just a plate; it has a fitting for the PCV hose, and a big metal extension that protrudes straight down into the intake plenum, apparently to put a hurdle in the airflow path from the carb to the middle cylinders (presumably so they wouldn't run too rich and the outer cylinders too lean).

Here's an exposure-adjusted version of the photo:

Lucmajuke, please feel free to upload more pics; you're nowhere near posting too many!

Was the side draft carb necessary as there was a lack of headroom for a normal down draft carb in the Clark-Cortez motor homes? Although it seems if there was not enough headroom for a carb, was there enough headroom to remove the valve cover?

Awesome.

Thanks Guys!

Yes I believe the reasoning for the side draft carb was due to the height restrictions of the engine bay.

The valve cover was removed after removing the engine box.

Right about the limited headroom in the Cortez engine compartment. Valve cover does come off with top covers removed but to get at the distributor and other bits, it’s better to also remove the passenger side cover. Top covers are about an inch above the carb.

When I removed the exhaust there was an additional exhaust flange with a tube bisecting it. Nothing attached, but I assume that was like the system Dan linked. Was thinking of winding some 1/4” soft copper tubing around one of the down pipes and putting a fitting on it to attach to the YH threaded choke inlet. Not sure if it would help…would need to get the heat to push through the tube. Is it a high pressure to low pressure thing or a cold air to warm air? Maybe a little of each.

Going out for a drive today!

Skip the improv and hassle; get a № 1113 electric choke kit instead and wind up with a better-working, less-troublesome automatic choke. 39 whole, entire dollars here.

The next thing would be too discuss ways to add power beyond the Dutra set up. Continue that here or start
a new thread?

Also, I tried to add some photos of the blocking plate/diverter but the Max file size was dropped to 256Kb.
