gas reclaim line

I recently discovered a gas line leak just ahead of rear passenger side wheel on my '80 Volare. Suspected it was reclaim line so I installed an older gas filter I had kicking around (with out the 't' for the reclaim line) No more gas smell and the motor is running great. Are there any problems I need to be aware of? Do I need an after market fuel cap to vent tank (my vent line running to the charcoal canister is still intact) I never capped reclaim line comming from tank and have had no leaks from this line, any concerns? Should I trace this line back to the tank and cap? I've been told the reclaim is to keep carb from percolating. True?

The return system should be fine with the filter you added.
I wonder if the added filter will trap anything? (there should be nothing but clean fuel & vapors in the return line part of the fuel system)

Think you misunderstood. By adding older style filter I eliminated the return line altogether. I just left the old line in place from tank to engine and all seems o.k..

Opps, I thought you added a second filter to repair the leak in the return line.
Return lines are a good thing, I add them into the early cars I have to prevent vapor lock and excess pressure on the needle valve (and drip through) after shut down.
Hot day vopor lock or hard restart after 5 to 10 minutes of shut down will tell you if disconnecting your return line as introduced new problems.
