Is there a difference between a balancer for manual trans slants and an automatic? Mine is a manual and flung itself apart, and I have a chance to get a fairly new one from an automatic.

No, but there is a difference between years in the location of the timing mark.

Boy, that was quick! It's an `84 engine and the damper is from a `79 passenger car. Can't wait to see the fun that awaits me in pulling the old one...

Just a quick run down... any damper will fit like 'zilla says....

There is a difference between the timing marks on the slants up to the mid/late 60's... and the 70's models... the cast crank engine (1976-up), has the 6 spoke damper and is slightly heavier than the forged crank model (not by much, and the timing marks are in the same spot as the 70's forged crank dampers)... as a side note, about 1979+ the timing tab gave way to that weird 0-20 strip and a tube to put a diagnostic probe into, so when you find TDC, make sure to mark your tab and damper so they match....

I think I screwed up. The original damper was a double pulley, and the new one is a single pulley. It physically bolts on, but the alternator and water pump don't line up.

Is there any bolt-on pulley I can get? None in the junkyard here.

Yes, there are add-on / bolt-on pulleys for the front and the rear of the current groove in the damper.

Just to throw a wrench into the works:

While looking something up during a conversation with Charrlie_S about his air conditioner compressor mount kit he's working on, I found the following on the relevant page of the 1982, 1984, and 1986-87 Dodge Truck FPCs:

DAMPER, Vibration:
4173 184: w/A833 Man Trans, 2-groove (listed as w/10" clutch in '82 and '84)
4095 220: w/NP435 Man Trans, 3-groove (listed as w/11" clutch in '82 and '84)
4095 527: w/Auto Trans, 1-groove

SHIELD, Vibration Damper Dust, w/Manual Trans:
4105 203 (listed as w/11" Clutch & 10" Clutch w/o Power Strg in '82 and '84)

The front bolt-on pulley is listed right up through '87, but the rear one isn't listed at all in any of these later-model applications. Which is strange, because it suggests you couldn't have A/C with an auto trans, and we know that's false.

I have a '77 Super Six in my '77 Aspen and last summer I pulled the A904 auto trans and replaced it with an '80 O.D. A-833. No real issues since then, but I noticed a light vibration at 60-70 mph (2500-ish rpm) when on the highway. Granted, the vibration could have come from other sources (worn u-joints, worn ring and pinon gears, etc.), but it was a consistent, cyclic vibration when at a constant speed.

I found this note (boxed out in pink) on vibration dampers in the '76 Service Highlights book, and wondered if this is something I should change on my car:




I'm not saying it's going to cure the minor vibration, but I hadn't heard nor read before that there's a different vibration damper for auto and manual trans applications after the cast crank became standard in '76.
