I've seen differing opinions on where to set the points gap....any suggestions?

0.016" is too narrow. The spec is 0.017" to 0.023", with 0.020" preferred, but...points? Really, truly not worth messing with. Grab the distributor off your '76 engine, pop it in the '69 engine, and hook the electronic ignition back up. It is better in every way.

I agree with Dan on that one definitely. You will be much happier with the EI. I need to get around to getting mine installed... even got this nice shiny custom curve job by D.I. for it!

I would keep the points dizzy in your box 'o spare parts (you do have one right?), they are handy in case of EI failure, or if you alt dies and you are miles from somewhere to get new parts.

Good suggestions...thanks.

My current dillema is this however:

The previous owner did something horrible/idiotic to the side of the original 76 engine that involved thoroughly wrecking the distributor.

He must've been prying with a prybar in that vicinity in order to try to get the head off??? I don't know.....but he just wrecked the EI distributor. The oil filter has similar pry marks on it as well, which gives me reason to believe that he was doing something like this.

Anyway...I could speculate about what complete fool thing was going on there until the cows come home, but the long and short of it is that I need a replacement/new 76 dizzy. Any suggestions? NAPA has one listed for around $60.

(until then, I've gotta get these points adjusted :) )

Brand-new electronic ignition distributors from Old Car Parts Northwest for a reasonable price; see discussion in the HEI upgrade article.
