Post subject: Next - map light? (Sun Nov 27, 2011 7:54 pm) Reply with quote

I'm retro-fitting the map light, switch, and glove-box circuit in my '68 Dart (anything that's worth doing is worth over-doing, right!?). I believe I duplicated the factory schematic. Results are the glovebox comes on when the glovebox door opens and the map light comes on when the dome light is on (door open). But when I flip the map light switch, the map light does not light. I've not had this feature on my cars so not sure if is this the way it's supposed to work, or should I be able to activate the map light with the switch as well? Thanks,
Bill

You should be able to turn on the map light alone, with the door closed (dome light off) with the map light switch. Make sure the switch is good!

Thanks for the confirmation Dan. I was thinking the switch should be able to operate independent of door light.
The map light switch is good.
My next question is whether I tapped into the door switch circuit at the right place. My schematic says to connect to the "right hand" door switch circuit, I assumed that to be the driver's side and tied in there. Should I have tapped into the passenger side instead?

Can't imagine it mattering which side you tap into. If memory serves, these lights are all ground-switched; they have a +12v feed at all times and opening a door or turning on the map light switch grounds them. What I don't remember is how the map light is isolated from the dome light so turning on the map light switch doesn't turn on the dome light.
