see i hear what you saying but if a guy only has an 1.8 miles to run his car should be tuned for the 1/8 mile....
meaning having the correct gear to still pull thru the lights... |

Note that these weights are sitting on the starting line, so driver and fuel included.

I recommend that we shift ALL discussion of this topic to the "Rule changes..." post in the main part of this Racing section. There are a lot of double posts and things are getting confusing.
This sticky post about records is supposed to be for posting of records, and direct discussion of actual records.
If I am wrong in my thinking, please advise (esp moderators).

Since I was the one that set the original weight breaks I will tell you how it was done. First the breaks were set to fit the serious slant 6 race cars that were around at that time. A fairly seriously lightened A Body like the Cox Bros, Goodman's, Guzzi's, or my blue Valiant come in at about 2350, A more typical racing A body like Merils, Rodneys, Ron Hambys. Barry Harrisons, Howard Davis', or Mike Jeffrey's are closer to the 2700#. The minimum for A class was set at 2000 because that is the minimum for an NHRA super street car where I hoped more of us would be competing. As far as I know only Dale Rose's car got to 2000 most other A cars are in between but a 2000# doorslammer is certainly possible. I also set the weight breaks with the idea of making the low deck engine competitive at the weight break for the next fastest class. i.e. you could go for the B class record while weighing 2000#. Nobody ever made a serious attempt to take advantage of this but that is also a reason the breaks are 350# apart.
When the D class was added I think the idea was to accomdate later model street cars that come in about that weight. There is no real reason the classes have to be the same distance apart.
If you were going to start with a clean sheet of paper you should probably define the classes on a weight per cubic inch basis like most NHRA classes. Originally the whole national record system was set up to give some recognition to racers who built there cars to go fast and to increase participation. Many racers have traveled to a slant 6 race just to try to set a record. Instead of changing everything around so you can get an easy record why don't you figure out how to set one under the existing system? The current system can accomodate practically anyone, you can always add weight to run in a heavier class like Mark did.

Car type and Locations added...

Hey Ryan,
Since a couple people have asked, I went through and added the vehicle types and most locations. Some of the locations I couldn't narrow down exactly because my spreadsheet didn't have all of the dates. I'll go through my SSRNs to add the right locations. No idea of any claimed weights. I assume Seymour has the claimed weights for everyone (?)
Any mistakes or if you know the location for any records, please post here. Thanks!

Seymour sent me the updated official Slant 6 records. Looks like PJ Jesiolowski took the ET record for D/Gas, and Mark now holds the A,B,C Gas records. The C/Gas record had stood for over 6 years prior. Congratulations to Mark and PJ on the new records. It's great having so many new records being set.

Rob, a big thanks for listing the car and where the record was set. I know it was a lot of trouble and it took you away from your car projects. The weight of the Lancer for the alcohol only B/A record was 2445 lbs.

I edited to correct Brent Laney's name spelling, and added my Dart racewt - 3410.

I've changed all of the 10/14/06 records from Farmington to Piedmont.
