Hi Guys, I have joined the local concert band, and have been practicing my french horn at least an hour a day. There is one night a week practice, and many concerts coming up. That is why I have not shown up here yacking away like I usually do. Rest assured I am NOT mad about something.
To top it off, the entire family was sick for several weeks, so we were going to bed early trying to get well. This included kids, and grandkids, whom we are day care for.
I am driving the Dart to work every day weather permitting which has actually been quite a bit this Winter. So, carry on, knowing I will be here lurking from time to time. I'm still around. And I am still digging the slant. I miss you, but this is something I have wanted to do for years, and finally bit the bullet and took the plunge. It is quite a commitment to join a band. They already count on me, and I take that seriously. So for now, I'm laying low on the forum.

Sam, If you want to Sit in and play some F Horn If my band your are welcome..
My kids in the Horn section can never play balls to the wall
I am always asking for them to USE MORE AIR!
@raPoM -
The Round Rock, TX HS band is pretty Good - They (many of the Texas Bands are) They compete in BOA like the school I teach At.
If you have kids in Round Rock they should definitely consider enrolling in band there
Best,
Greg |

We're playing pretty much the standard concert band literature. There is a smattering of marches, which horn players tend to dislike, a nice medly of big band pieces called Big Band Bash, and selections from Les Miserable. The composers include, Holst, Grainger, DeleJoio, Vaughan Williams, Leroy Anderson, Von Suppe, Malcom Arnold, etc.
I am back after years away from it, so I have much room for improvement before I am up to my old ability. The first horn player is an ex Army band member, and is fabulous. He is a real inspiration.
Thanks for your support and interest guys. Greg, I knew you would be a fan of this. Get the Kopprasch Sixty Selected Studies for French Horn for your horn players, and make them play the first study FF every day. They will develop a big tone for sure. I like your avatar photos.

Sounds like some Good stuff Sam..
THe Army / Navy / Marine Bands always have excellent members..
My Personal Favorite is the Airmen of note..
I did work out of the Kopprasch Book when I was in college studying horn as One of my Minors.. Fun stuff.
Make sure you drive the dart to/fro band rehearsals .. More tuning time..err for mega squirt not your horn.

| If you play the french horn, then you simply MUST pick up a copy of Peter Schickele's "PDQ Bach On The Air," if for no other reason than the "Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony Sportscast." Prof. Schickele is orchestra humor at its finest. I used to play the viola, I have a sister who plays the viola, and I have a sister and a brother who used to play cello, so we really enjoy Prof. Schickele's work. |

I was in NYC over Winter holiday season, and went to Lincoln Center, which was nearly new then and bought tickets to the PEQ Bach guy without really knowing what it was. It was a riot. The guy was hilarious. Then when I got married in 1968, I took my wife to the Constitution hall here in DC to see PDQ Bach. This time I knew what to expect. He opened the show by falling out of the balcony; literally, with a follow spot on him.
Then, in 2000 the National symphony put on a mega piano concert series that lasted a week with about 10 of the finest pianists playing various pieces with orchestra, solo, and as multiple piano as well. One of the pianist was guess who? Peter Schickele. This time playing straight up, with no high jinks. He is a very fine pianist. Of course he was still a bit of a clown, but he played the music as written and well.
I used to listen to him on NPR every Sat at 11 on my way to my second piano tuning customer. It was very entertaining. I am sorry to see it gone, but I guess he kind of ran out material after awhile.
