Sandy,
Have heard there's a regular crew that surfs on the west side of Vancouver Island. Some guys from here have even surfed up in Alaska, which requires some serious wet-suitage...6/5 minimum, with fill hood, booties and gloves, I think. Even then the cold gets to you after not too long of a while. And the bears on the beach can actually be more of a worry than the sharks in the water.

I have an old photo of myself, at an age of about 1 - 1 1/2 years, playing at the feet of my grandparents who are sitting on their garden bench. They are white haired, grandpa with trousers almost up under the armpit and wide suspenders, and old type shirt that used separatly attached collar, grandma with her tightly wound hairknot - they look OLD, just as I remember them to be.
Then it slowly dawned on me; hmm, that photo must be taken in mid fifties, they were born just before the turn of the last century. Holy crap, I am older today than they were in that photo!! And I'm young!!
Or rather, that's the way I feel and act...
These are new times, Richard!
Olaf

My sister surfed the Wet side of the Island for many years. There is a high school surf team from Ucuelet.
My wife and I surfed Mission Beach in San Diego last year (she had never been in the Ocean before but was up on her first wave. Age 50) Many snowboarding skills crossover. |
