There were 9 racers on hand Friday evening at Elk Creek, VA watching the clouds and hoping for the best...

It wasn't to be... :(

Ron Hamby talked to the track folks and they agreed to let us run both races on Saturday! :D

That wasn't to be either...

They made the call early that the event was to be cancelled. The weather looked better without any rain, but it was too little / too late and we were left to bench race or go home...

Folks that made the call:

Ron Hamby
Meril Bruner
Gary Bruner
Courtney Bruner
Jack Everhardt
Mike Andreas
Ryan Covalt
Whitney Covalt
Rob Simmons

Mark Charapich was added to the group Saturday morning.

Jack and Mike are still Rookies (both have raced just once with us in 2004 [Mike] and 2011 [Jack]). That would have bumped our 2012 Rookie count up to 16! :D

Here's the story with pictures and some of the drama folks faced getting there:

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=49035

Next up for the East Coasters is Knoxville, TN on 3-4 August. Keeping our fingers crossed for good weather...

The Samoa results have been posted on the Killer Bees website and Allen Dutra is our new points leader! :D

He had another good showing at Samoa following up his impressive results from Sacramento in May to take the lead from fellow Killer Bee Andrew "Kidd" Howard.

It was Aric Erickson in his "Swingin' Six" Dart that beat all comers this weekend to land in the #3 spot in National Points!

Andrew Howard was concentrating on hosting and coordinating the race, so he graciously went out first round both days. That now puts him in 4th place overall.

CJ Stoakes added another 42 points this weekend to climb from 8th place to 2nd in National Points.

The two Top Ladies of Slant 6 Drag Racing were also on hand at Samoa and ended up the weekend tied for points with 54 apiece in the #8 spot.

"Record Collector" Mark Etheridge had Seymour Pederson fly all the way out from Minnesota for this event in an effort to combine creative energies and take the A/Nitrous MPH record away from Will Burns who set it at 125.53 MPH back in 2002!

Mark and Seymour have gone back and forth over the last several years trying to see who could get the lowest ET in the A and B/Gas categories. Also to see who could cut the most weight out of their '62 Valiants!

Now that Seymour has generously handed his Valiant over to Young Gun Ryan Covalt, he is free to do consulting of this type for anyone interested for a nominal fee... Just PM him with your request. (Just Kidding! That's a joke! Don't PM him! )

Mark and Seymour couldn't quite get the record. They got it up to 124.61 MPH into a 5-6 mph headwind. They put their heads together and came up with a couple ideas to try again at Woodburn next month.
(Mark wants that A/Nitrous MPH record to compliment his recently nabbed ET record of 10.576. )

Other folks racing at Samoa this weekend were Mark Murray, Frank Wright, Doug Dutra and the Bjerklund father/son team. Doug now sits in the #7 spot just ahead of the "Top Two Ladies".

There were no new faces at Samoa, so the Rookie count stays at 14 (16 if you want to count the two that showed up to the cancelled Elk Creek race).

With the "Elk Creek Rain Out" this weekend for the East Coasters, it looks like the Killer Bees stand an excellent chance of keeping the Slant 6 National Points Travelling Trophy for another year.

East Coaster Charlie Schmid stands the best chance of bringing that trophy back East. He currently sits at 6th in National Points and plans to tow up to Knoxville the weekend of 3-4 August. He'll have to win a couple rounds each day to take that #1 seat. He has posted that he's chasing a record at Knoxville though,... so round wins may not be his priority. Those two things are often mutually exclusive.

Killer Bee action heads back up North to Woodburn the weekend of 11-12 August. Look for local CJ Stoakes and Andrew Howard to put up some round wins along with those Two Top Ladies that weekend.

Here's the list:

Knoxville saw 14 brave souls chance the weather and tow to the track with hopes of racing.

Unfortunately, it was not to be... AGAIN. :(

This is the second "Rain Out" in a row for the East Coasters.

14 cars is likely a record car count for this race. I will confirm that on Monday.

Charlie Schmid and friend Steven Adams towed up from Florida while Ryan Covalt and friend Frank Funk (Leading Rookie of the Year) towed down from Pennsylvania with three cars! Ryan's friend Andrew Shank lives in Knoxville and would drive the third car.

Other racers that braved the weather for Knoxville were:

Meril Bruner
Gary Bruner
Lukus Bruner
Courtney Bruner
Larry Chesney
Rodney Hargis
Jack Everhardt
Ron Hamby
Norm Foster

The very person that started the Knoxville "Roll Call" thread and twisted people's arms to show up chickened out and stayed home!  He said he would be there with two cars, but then backed out Friday morning with some lame excuse about the weather and being afraid to tow that far...

Not only that, but then he goes on to post some "Best Times" and brag about how well his new towing set up worked and how he and his son raced locally!

Word has it that the East Coasters at Knoxville are gonna give that person a "blanket party" at either Bristol or Clay City! (whichever race he has the guts to show up for... )

The racing action heads back West as the Killer Bees swarm back to Woodburn next weekend. :D

I was mistaken about this being the record car count for Knoxville. In 2008 there were 18 cars there!

This was the second largest car count. They've had 13 cars a couple times.

Woodburn #2 is "In the Books" and local racer CJ Stoakes takes the lead in National Points with his Runner-Up finish on Saturday and Semi-Finalist finish on Sunday.

PJ Jesiolowski's Demon was running good to take her to the win on Saturday and win a round on Sunday to put her in the #2 spot.

Wendy Pine's tranny troubles were also fixed and she was on hand with her black Dart to land in the #8 spot Nationally.

East Coaster Lou Madsen drove his turbo charged '68 Dart all the way from Virginia to race with the Killer Bees and won the race on Sunday! He is now in the 10th spot.

Right after the race Lou and "Record Collector" Mark Etheridge headed to the Salt Flats for more Slant 6 racing fun.

Mark set a couple more records at Woodburn by taking the A/Nitrous MPH record from Will Burns with a 127 MPH pass and re-setting his own B/Nitrous MPH record.

Father and Son team of Richard and Mike Bjerklund were there as usual and Mike took the lead in the hotly contested Inliner's points race over Walt Skoczylas in his Slant 6 powered H.A.M.B. style rail. Check out the PICS posted in the Event Calendar thread for Woodburn to see this sweet ride.

Rob "Duster Idiot" Armstrong won a round on Saturday, but pushed a little too hard in his 4 speed Duster... Looks like a new clutch may be in order... :(

The racing team of Dave Mueller and Doug Powers were also racing at Woodburn in both the Slant 6 and Inliners classes. Doug won two rounds in the Slant 6 class on Saturday.

The Rookie that won the Woodburn race last year, Randy Ashley, showed up again this year and won a round both Saturday and Sunday.

The last person on the list raced just on Sunday to fill the spot vacated by the clutch frying Rob Armstrong... Joe is his name... and he apparently drives a unique Dart... That's all we know so far...

Here's the list:

CJ Stoakes - 136
PJ Jesiolowski - 106
Allen Dutra - 95
Aric Erickson - 82
Andrew Howard - 76

Frank Funk (Rookie) - 72
Charlie Schmid - 67

Great rundown, Rob. Big congrats to CJ and PJ on their advancing points and race win.

I reset the D/U MPH record on Friday eve at Woodburn to 99.91 MPH (backed up by a 10.98 MPH!). Seymour has the slips from my records set at Mason-Dixon too. So, I actually have 59 pts (5 pt for records this year). I think there may be a few Western racers who would like to come East next year and try to win a race....

Oh yeah, Guzzi Mark should have 57 pts due to his record setting as well.

Ciao,

Lou

(yes, still high on salt)

Mark Etheridge got his 5 points at Vegas and they're included in his total.

Charlie Schmid got his 5 points at Mason-Dixon and they're included in his total.

Will Burns got his 5 points at Mason-Dixon and they're included in his total.

No other records have been updated in the Records thread yet.

Cool.

Question: Did Mark go to 7 races? If not, how could he have 52 pts? Just curious.

My record from M-D should be official soon, since I gave slips to Seymour recently. I have two more to send him too!

Lou

Yup, 7 races so far:

Vegas - 1 + 5 bonus = 6
Sacramento - 1 and 1 = 2
Samoa - 11 and 1 = 12
Woodburn - 1 and 31 = 32

Total = 52

The Killer Bees braved the heat again at Medford this weekend and it looks to me like CJ Stoakes has all but wrapped up the National Championship.

More details to follow...

Remember, there are 6 more race days in the East, and CJ can only count his best 5... Maybe Rick or Rob can get us another 50 pointer out East??

I am becoming inspired to make a run at the title this year. Maybe I'll swap a race trans and converter into the new Valiant before Bristol? CJ will be hard to catch...

Lou
