Ryan has a 74 Duster that he bought that had been sitting for @ 3 years before he bought it. It ran fine and he drove it home and started to do some work on it. After it was inspected last week he started driving it and noticed a sqeaking noise that turned out to be the rocker arms running totally dry. Upon removing the valve cover it appeared that no oil was getting up top. We removed the rocker arms and shaft and I ran a wire down through the oil hole as well as down through the hole from the rear head bolt. We changed the oil and serviced the oil pump relief valve but it still does not get any oil out to the rockers. I installed a known good, clean set of rockers and a new shaft and still no oil. If I loosen the rear bolt in the rockers while it is idling oil does drip out from around the bolt. So why is it not filling the shaft and oiling the rockers?

Thanks for the help.

Rick

Oil holes lined up properly? Cam bearing spun blocking the passage in the block?

I was playing around on my slant and ran with the valve cover off to observe the oiling @ idle.check the rear bolt to see if there is some crud around it , blocking the flow to the shaft.
is the rear bolt factory with a shoulder ?

I know the 1978+ heads have the shouldered bolts, and up to about 1975-1976 the rear bolt is almost straight with a little over bore in the rear bolt hole.

I'd check for crud in the hole, check to make sure that the rocker shaft is oriented correctly. If all else fails, you could take a dremel tool and make a little groove up one side of the bolt to see if it allows a steady trickle of oil through.

Do you mean flipped end for end?

Yes it can be that or rolled 180 from normal orientation...(on the early shafts either can be done if you don't know which way the rocker oiling holes are supposed to be oriented).

Proper rocker arm oiling hole orientation for mechanical rocker arm shafts is discussed here. The oiling holes for the mechanical rocker arm shaft should be pointed down and towards the manifold side of the engine.
