The Clay City race for 2018 is going to be the largest gathering of Slant 6 racers ever assembled! We are reaching out to every current and former Slant 6 drag racer along with anyone else that has an interest in the Slant 6 engine to join us for this historical event.

You don’t have to be a racer or even own a vehicle to come and hang out with us! If you are reading this post, that qualifies you as a “Slant 6 Enthusiast”! So come to Clay City, KY the weekend of 7-9 September 2018 to see the best Slant 6 drag racing on earth and hang out with some of the most welcoming and down to earth people you could ever meet. The wife, boys and daughter will just have to run the orchard without me that weekend. Maybe Stan and I will have to have a grudge match with our Lancer wagons.

I have met very few of you. Just a few fairly close to me and some that attend MATS. I have talked with several more of you on the stronger ARP head studs that we ordered a couple of years ago. Looking forward to meeting the rest of you.
I may bring my supercharged EFI slanted 1960 Dodge Phoenix too. I haven't had that down the strip yet.

I had re-typed and posted most of the Clay City '98 race report from SSRN #8, but the board crash lost it.
I didn't have the energy to re-type the whole thing again, so I used modern technology to bring you Seymour's accounting of "A Magic Moment".
It's long, but well worth the read and should inspire you to make this Clay City Racer's Reunion a priority! Enjoy the read:

A MAGIC MOMENT

We all have a right to feel proud of our contribution to the just completed Clay City Race. The turnout of Slant 6 racers was excellent, the quality of the cars fielded was top notch, and the racing action was exciting to the last run.

Every time I look at the never to be forgotten group picture, I remember what a magic moment this really was. If there is never another major Slant 6 race, we should all be proud of what we accomplished.

Let us remember and thank all those who made it possible:

Bob Rogers, promoter of the Mopar Muscle Southern Classic. He treated us as a major part of his show and made us feel like a bunch of booked in Pro-Mods! Thanks Bobby!

Doug Dutra, he worked with Bobby setting everything up, made a million phone calls and Emails, and got some neat banners made to promote Slant 6 racing.

Bob Stepp, the consummate fan of Slant 6 racing, put up some of the prize money for our race; and flat towed Dutra's car all the way from Sunnyvale, CA.

Jack Clifford, he also contributed to the prize money as well as manufacturing those special parts that can be found on all the top running Slant 6 cars.

Tailfins.com, the best Mopar oriented internet site and home of Internet Slant 6 Club, also contributed to the prize money for our race.

Slant 6 Club of America, contributed "door prizes" for competitors and in a very real way made all this possible.

Wes Alumbaugh and Mark Goodman for decorating their trailer with those awesome Slant 6 racing murals. They really added a touch of class to the Slant 6 pit area!

The Clay City Track and Crew, they ran a smooth, efficient race and were always pleasant to deal with.

All you racers who made it a point to be a part of this race, making it the biggest Slant 6 event ever!
I also want to personally thank all of you who put in your best motor, advanced the timing, leaned out mixture, or turned on the nitrous in an effort to show the fans how fast a Slant 6 can really go.

In that regard, I continue to have a dream that instead of leaving the stands to grab a hot dog when Slant 6 time trials are announced, the fans will drop everything and run for a place at the fence to watch. The only way to make this happen is more power, more noise, faster times, and maybe a few wheelstands. If we could make this happen, you would see the promoters of Mopar shows competing with each other to add a Slant 6 race to their event.

Right now, the best way I can see to spice up the show, is by using blowers and nitrous. This is why Slant 6 Racing News has done its part to promote exotic projects of this type. I often hear that these power enhancers, as well as alcohol, delay boxes, or whatever you don't have; are going to be the death of grassroots Slant 6 racing.
I understand that these sorts of modifications may not make for a very consistent bracket racer. But like the SS/AA Hemi racers in Superstock, who usually wind up as first round cannon fodder for the rest of the field, some guys will go to extreme lengths just to have the fastest Slant 6. I feel we need to encourage this, but I would be happy to hear from those of you who strongly feel otherwise.
Remember, your writer is basically an old class racer. As long as I have the typewriter you can be sure that there will always be special recognition for the racers who make the most horsepower per cubic inch the old fashioned way!

RODNEY RULES!
The long awaited, much touted, Slant 6 Showdown is now history. The hard work of everybody involved produced an event that exceeded the expectations of all those who participated. When the 16 car Slant 6 Showdown was over, Rodney Hargis of Wartburg, TN was once again in the winner's circle. Rodney has won 3 of the 4 Slant 6 races held this year. (He didn't enter the fourth.) Rodney, his Father Jerry, and their turquoise 1962 Lancer are definitely the team to beat in Slant 6 bracket racing.

I knew this race would be special when a sign at the entrance directed me to the Slant 6 pits! We have a large and convenient piece of ground right by the timing tower all to ourselves. Doug Dutra has put up several banners to identify our area, publicize the Slant 6 Club, and the Slant 6 Racing News. He even has one right on the drag strip starting line!

Twenty Slant 6 competitors are here. Practically every Slant 6 race car currently running made the trip, including Dutra's 67 Barracuda from California!

Charles Myers and crew are here with their beautiful rear-engined dragster, the actual car is even more impressive than the pictures we have seen.

Mike Jeffrey and Mark Goodman are both here with their 11 second A bodies.

Mark and partner Wes Alumbaugh brought 2 cars. Wes decided he had to have his own Slant 6 race car, so he bought back Mark's old 62 Valiant that was for sale in SSRN #7. Now that they have a 2 car team, Wes decorated his trailer with pictures of both cars and a Slant 6 Racing motif.

James Morgan is here with his hard leaving 60 Valiant 2 door.

Meril Bruner has 3 cars, including his red "Half Hemi” car with Slant 6 power again.

Two 66 Valiants catch my eye. One is a neat little white one featuring an immaculately prepared Hyper Pak motor. It is raced by Barry Harrison and Richard Anderson from Florence, SC.

The other 66 belongs to Jeff Droll from Fostoria, OH. Jeff hasn't raced his car in several years. I wouldn't exactly call it immaculate, but Jeff is one clever racer and turned 13.77 with what is basically a street machine. I expect we will be hearing more from Jeff in the future.

On Saturday morning Howard Davis arrived with his very trick Hillside Six from Bedford, IN.

Also on Saturday, who do I meet but the dean of Slant 6 racers, Pete McNicholl down from Hale, MI just to see what's going on these days.

Dennis Schumers is here with his 76 Duster to be driven by his wife, Annette. Annette’s car is one of the slowest here and they are afraid that they won't qualify for the 16 car Slant 6 Showdown. Not to worry! By race time four cars are out due to breakage, and as you will see later; the Schumers were very much in the race.

Unfortunately, one of the broken cars was Charles Myers' dragster. After turning a 10.20, the timing chain and gear let go while doing a burnout. I never got a chance to see him run. Equally tragic, Mark Goodman's Lancer broke a rod and wiped out the block in the process. On that run he set top doorslammer speed of 112 MPH, and would have been dueling with Mike Jeffrey for low doorslammer ET on Saturday.

The 16 remaining cars made three qualifying runs on Saturday morning. The track and the conditions were right for some great runs.

The race field looked like this:
11 seconds – 2 cars
12 seconds – 4 cars
13 seconds – 4 cars
14 seconds – 3 cars
Above 14 seconds – 3 cars

Considering that Charles' dragster, Mark's Lancer, and Gary Bruner's 13.0 64 Valiant were out; the quality of the field was greatly improved over last year's race where only two cars were running in the high twelves. Mike Jeffrey's 11.67 stood as the low ET for Saturday and also took the low ET doorslammer honors.

The race action was fast and furious. By the third round it was down to last year's runner up Ron Hamby in his 66 Dart, Annette Schumers in her 76 Duster, Junior Foley driving Meril Bruner's Half Hemi Car, and ever present Rodney Hargis in his 62 Lancer. Annett pressured Hamby with a .502 light. Ron lit the red bulb while Annette motored through with a 19.80 ET. Rodney took out Junior in a close contest, setting up a dramatic final between the experienced veteran and the excited rookie. Annette flinched and caught a .693 light, Rodney was out with a .546 and pretty much controlled the race. He didn't let off though and won with a 13.58 on his 13.57 dial! He must really know how that car is going to run each race. Annette slowed to a 20.00 on her 19.85 dial. She was most pleased with her runner up finish and husband Dennis could even be seen to be beaming a bit! Rodney proved once again that he is the man to beat. He is also a true gentleman and an all around nice guy. We are all proud to honor him as the Slant Six Showdown champion.

Before the final round was run all the Slant 6 racers got together in front of Alumbaugh's trailer to pose for a group picture. And a joyous group it was. Then Mark Goodman and the Slant 6 Racers presented an award to Meril Bruner recognizing his contribution to the revival of Slant 6 racing. Doug Dutra was also recognized for his efforts coordinating this race and his life-long interest in promoting Slant 6s. Then they presented your writer with a plaque recognizing my "creative contribution to Slant 6 Racing" through this newsletter. The plaque included the signatures of everybody at the race. It occupies a prominent place in the office where we work on the newsletter. Thank you Mark and everybody for thinking of us.

The awards continued on Sunday when Doug Dutra accepted the "Long Distance Award". He will have to share that one with Bob Stepp. Doug also was presented with an award for best club participation at the race on behalf of the Slant 6 Club of America. The four Slant 6 Showdown finalists also received nice trophies from the event.

For those of you who couldn't be there, let me just reminisce about some of the images that stick in my memory.

The sound of unmuffled Slant 6 engines running side by side.

Meril Bruner nipping stepson Lukus in a very close race, showing the old pro still has a couple of good moves left.

Mike Jeffrey looking for Will Burns’ Barracuda in their second time trial, and finding him right along side. Will turned on his new Nitrous system for this run and showed us an awesome 11.80 in the process of frying his engine.

Jeff Droll loading his car on the trailer after the tower incorrectly dialed him in at 13.00 instead of 13.77. He was mad as hell, but you gotta check your dial in before staging.

Jim Cox convinced Jeff to stay and run in the Saturday night bracket race.

Annette Schumers screaming at the guy handing out timing slips, "I am in the finals!!".

Meril Bruner just being Meril.

Charles Myers and crew polishing up their wounded motor to show it off to the fans and answer their many questions.

Envying the way Howard Davis and his wife worked so well together.

The hole in Mark Goodman's block and pan.

The lift on Mike Jeffrey's valves.

Rodney Hargis and Junior Foley hustling to get back to the staging lanes as they kept winning rounds in both the Slant 6 Race and the Saturday night's overlapping 1/8 mile bracket race.

Pete McNicholl's vest with patches commemorating every Chrysler built car and Chrysler oriented event there ever was.

Next year don't just read about it, be there at Slant Six Showdown - 1999!

POSITIVE WORDS FROM BOB STEPP:

Gary Bruner, last year's winner at Bristol, burned a piston in his trusted Valiant.
Will Burns, experimenting with nitrous, burned a piston in his slippery cuda.
Mark Goodman windowed the block in his mean green Lancer.
And Charles Myers sheared a timing chain and gears in his outrageous dragster.
Yes, four excellent contenders went out early, and yet the Slant 6 racers still had enough entries to fill the 16 car field! Bottom line: The Slant 6 as a racing engine is on its way back. It is alive and well in America's heartland.
Many, Many thank you's to each and every Slant 6 racer who turned out for the Showdown at the Mopar Muscle Southern Classic. It was an outstanding weekend.
Do we have momentum for 1999? Can we use the success at Clay City to work towards multiple National Slant 6 events? You bet!

Thanks for the report re-post, Rob. Good stuff! Wish I had gone to that race in 1998 instead of driving to the Mopar Nats (CA to OH) in my 14 second 64 Dart...

Lou
