Hello all, first post on the forums. Making a big road-trip out west in my 1965 Valiant V200 Convert. "Valerie" Looking to get a DUI Tri-Power distributor ordered before this happens so I get better mileage and better highway performance. The problem is I'm missing some important numbers before I can order. (I'm out west the car's back east). I was wondering if anyone knows the "Advertised" Cam Duration, Cam Duration (@.050) and CFM for a stock 1970 225ci slant? I think I've figured out the rest of the numbers using online research.

There are better ways to spend your money.

I would find a stock electronic ignition dist and swap your springs and weights into it.

I would do the well documented HEI conversion.

I would adjust the valves.

Well the HEI is out cause I'm not an electrical engineer. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Mopar-Sl ... m570.l1313 would this be an acceptable alternative?

I'll agree with Sandy here, you should do the HEI conversion in the electrical section. That tri power distributor has a HEI conversion in it, but it is mounted in a bad spot (low on the engine with the distributor where water and such can get to it) and has a module of unknown origin. NOS electronic distributors are still available for around 100 bucks, do the work yourself and it will be cheaper and more reliable.

Cam specs at .050 are not printed anywhere I know of, except in rebuild kits that have camshafts included. Sealed power lists their camshaft at 198 int/ 203 ex @.050. Lift is .405/.411.

The tripower kit is pretty much a HEI conversion, you will still need to do some of the wiring changes even with their distributor (like bypassing ballast resistor). Quite a few people have installed HEI without using relays and such like the how-to does, but I do understand if it seems like diving into the deep end.

The electronic ignition kits are sourced from China these days and the quality is lacking, the HEI conversion is more dependable and can be sourced with good parts still.

Well I'm not electrically confident enough to do that much rewiring for HEI. I do fluids, brakes, plugs, wires, and suspension. Anything that requires, micrometers or voltage readers I eye with suspicion.

You can do an HEI conversion!!! It is not as hard as it first seems to be. No multi meter-voltage reader required!!

Again, no diagnostics required. What everyone is saying is that it is not hard once you have the parts on hand, and can see them in front of you.

First step is go get a electronic distributor, ether from a junk yard near you, or Car-part.com. Plymouth-dodge-Chrysler started using electronically triggered distributors in 74 I believe, so anything later than that is a step in the right direction. Then get a "HEI" Module from a parts store (76 chevy 1/2 ton 5.7 litre/350) AND there you have 95% of the electronic ignition that performance distributors is selling.. at less than half the cost..... and I promise you they do not have a "perfomance" curve in the

If you can install a distributor and time it, to the #1 cylinder, then you can strip and crip wires ( following a wiring diagram..) We are here to help if you get stuck... and the sense of accomplishment is something you will feel good about

Have a look at this Schematic for a basic idea:

the parts such as:

To my knowledge, I was the first guy to actually retrofit HEI to a slant six. I did it working with Goldduster318, a member of the now defunct slantsix.com. I retrofitted the HEI module to a 1974 Valiant that already had an elelctronic ignition distributor. I used no relays and grounded the module to the inner fender support. It worked GREAT. The HEI retrofit is very very easy to do. You are going to be swapping the distributor out anyway, and HEI is not that many more steps.

So do I need the just the distributor or do I need the larger ballast resistor and the wiring and such?

For a bare-bomes swap you need an electronic ignition distributor, a four pin HEI module, some wire, and some electrical terminals. The ballast resistor us actually eliminated in the HEI swap. There is a very good write up in the electrical faqs on this site of how to do the HEI upgrade.

Many people run relays, but I don't, because it is just one more thing to go wrong and I have never had an issue with any of the 5 or 6 vehicles that I have installed them on. Always have had plenty of voltage over at the HEI module so I didn't worry about it. Not saying they should not be installed. Just that the whole HEI set up can be installed very simply. Only 4 wires on the HEI module. And 2 of them go directly to the distributor. Only 2 more connections! They go to the coil! :D :D You got this!

Here is the drawing I use. It is not original with me. Someone made up the nice drawing, I added the notes to help my pea brain remember. Maybe it will help? :D
