I tried in vain to find an answer for this on the Internet. Sort of feel like a fool for asking something like this, but here goes.

I used to be a mechanic in the military, and in mechanic school we were taught that the slant six was actually 1/2 of a V-12 that Dodge created for a gas-powered tank the US gov shut down. They split the V-12 in half, and eventually we got the slant-6.

Cool story, but is it true?

No, the slant was a never a tank engine nor was it designed for it. The slant six was designed to power the Valiant and was originally drawn up as a slant-four. Well, it did'nt have enough power to pull a greasy string out of a cat's butt so the designers added two more cylinders and the 170 slant-six was born. And the rest is history.

Allpar.com has alot on the story of the Valiant and the development of the slant six.

Completely false. The Slant-6 was a clean-sheet design that started life, from the earliest sketches, as a slant-6 (Jeb: It did not start out as a slant-4, not sure where that notion came from).

Years before the slant-6 existed, Chrysler did produce Sherman Tank engines consisting of five Flathead-six blocks bolted to a common crankcase, with all five crankshafts geared to a massive central common shaft, creating a "W-30" engine.

I have to say that I have read and heard about the slant 4 being the predecessor of the slant six telling the same tale that jeb posted here. Kinda makes sense, if you cut 2 cyls outta the slant six you have nuttin, man

The old Tailfins.com site once mentioned an article on a military vehicle that used a pair of slant sixes, one at each end. They weren't able to confirm if this thing was real, but if it was, this might be how that rumor got started.

One of the "legends" that used to be very prevalent was that the Slant was half a V-12 Porsche motor out of a Panzer tank.

Actually, I'm not supposed to tell you this, because it's privileged information, but the Slant-6 was actually 1/25th of the 150-cylinder radial engine used to power the flying saucer that landed at Area 51 in 1948.

Shh! Don't tell anyone. I know I can trust you guys.

"Landed at Area 51"? I suggest you have that fact wrong, Dan. If I'm not mistaken, you're thinking of the one that >crashed< at Roswell, New Mexico.

Remember.......the time warp device that the kid found in the old aircraft salvage yard in the movie "My Science Project"?

(and you all thought that was just a movie)
