I need a new harmonic balancer for my 81 Dodge truck. I found one on ebay from dampner doctors but it says its for a 60-68 slant 6. Is there really a difference in the balancers after 68?? It looks the same as mine in the picture but I would like to know for sure. Thanks

'81 = cast crankshaft. '60-'68 dampers are for forged cranks. Actually, '67-'76 is the correct damper year grouping, '60 being by itself, '61-'62 being by themselves and '63-'66 being its own group—differences being timing marks. The '81 needs a '76-up cast-crank damper, difference being construction (not just timing marks).

I sent my old damper from my 1980 D-150 Truck to Damper Doctor and about $60 and they sent me back mine rebuilt. Awesome job! It was even microsleeved where the seal goes.

Okay...there was a recent magazine article on the Slant that said they used a 440 damper...but the timing marks were off so "they made their own".

Will a B or RB harmonic balancer actually work on a Slant? If it would then that would certainly open up the availability of aftermarket Balancers...

A fellow in the Seattle chapter of the old Slant Six Club of America used a Deusenberg (SP?) dampener on his 170. He said it was VERY expensive ut was a direct bolt on part.

Quite a few of the racers have big block dampers on their motors.

Dan, can you please elaborate on what the structural difference is between a cast and forged damper? I have never been able to actually find any difference. :?: :?: :D

I know the old Mopar books said there was a difference.

I can't...my notes on the topic are buried in Denver!

It's a real easy question if you've seen both side by side...
1) The hubs are slightly different (6 spoke for Cast crank, 3 big spokes for forged)
2) Timing marks are slightly different (the cast crank one has two timing cuts 120 degrees apart, the forged crank versions that I have only have 1 'nick')
3) The outer 'ring' is thicker and slightly beefier on the cast crank version (I think this is due to the lighter crank), the pulley groove is 'offset' to one side of the thicker ring (forged crank is centered)
4) The counter balance 'notch' is thicker and offset a bit differently on both outer rings.

One thing I'd like Doc to chime in on, is the fact that all the cranks are 'neutral balanced' so you should be able to swap any of these dampers back and forth between any year mill as long as you have the correct timing cover with correct tab placement, so what are the long term problems of having the 1976+ cast heavy damper on the 1968-1976 Forged crank...can it be any worse than a 440 damper on the slant?

:?:

I'll run out and get a couple of 'pics'...

Clockwise top left: Forged crank damper from Damper Doctors, Right=Cast crank from Damper Dudes
Left=Forged Crank from Damper Dudes
Middle=OEM pull from Cast Crank 225 in 1979 Aspen

Cast crank remanf from Damper dudes/ Left=OEM Cast Crank

Balancing marks for left to right=Forged Crank(67-76), Cask Crank OEM, Cast Crank Remanf.

Notice the thickness and placement of the groove, Forged crank left, Cast Crank right

Late Forged unit right, cast crank unit left.

Micro sleeved remanfs, and the OEM unit.

Wish I had a scale I'd be able to tell you the weight difference between the two units...
Also, most remanf units have the outer ring 'cut' in 120 degree sectors for timing marks so they can get one 'close' to your OEM mark...

I just use red dampers on red moders and blue dampers on blue moders.....cept my turquoise 69 moder......and the yellow truck moder....then I just paint them black and they run fine.

So....I can use a 440 damper if I paint it black?

Does NAPA stock Dusenburg dampers?

Thanks DI! I have never noticed the six leg ones before. I'm pretty sure my cast cranker has a 3 on it.

It's interesting as all the 1977-1979 slants I've stripped out have had the 6 spoke damper, and the 60's and 74-76 forged mills I've stripped are all 3 spoke....

LOL...

mopar parts mayhem, I guess...

Here's your 1976 Parts Book Lesson for today...

Damper, Crankshaft w/ manual tranny forged crank 2806211
Used up to 6-1-76 Windsor Engine plant, up to 9-1-76 Trenton Engine plant

Manual tranny Cast crank 4071060
Used only on 'E' stamped cast crank engines after 6-1-76 Windsor plant, 9-1-76 Trenton Plant

In 1978:

4095527 Auto Tranny
4095525 Man Tranny in F-body, and LeBaron/Diplomat
4100696 Man Tranny in Fury and Monaco

-D.Idiot

This doesn't preclude a junkyard swap or some sleepy assembly worker on graveyard just putting some damper on one motor or the other, either...

Interesting DI! I have never seen anything except 3 poke dampers....all identical....cast and forged....hence my joking about colours.

I suspect the Windsor plant remark may clear this up....Windsor is a Canadian plant,,,and I bet they used the same damper for ever.

So after reading through the topic the question still remains, Will the 440 dampener work on steel cranks or not?
