Are the starters on a 4-speed and automatic the same? My 67 d100 is a standard,was at pick n pull and there's one on an automatic. there both 2-bolt but I'm thinking maybe the teeth are different?

There would be no advantage to a special starter on the manual trans.
There used to be rebuild kits available, but very few people go this route today.
In my opinion, one from a junk yard will be a crap shoot.
Make sure you can test it before purchase.
They are available over the counter for a very reasonable price.
I believe the newer ones (mini-starter) will also fit.

The determination will be starter position...some 60's vehicles depending on options may have the low mount starter- either for the 11" clutch or if the vehicle had the adapter for the
A-727 automatic...

If your vehicle is equipped with the low mount starter it will require the direct drive 9 tooth drive gear starter with no other interchange, early versions from the earlier 60's may have 3 mounting bolt holes.... I would hoard spares as these aren't getting easy to find.

If your starter is the high mount (is mounted just under the exhaust manifold on the bellhousing). Then you may use any of the standard gear reductions starters with the 10 tooth drive gear,
including slant six, small block and big block... you also can use the denso starter from the early to mid -90's Dakota, Ram or Ramchargers (Magnum engine 3.9,5.2,5.9L)...

I just happen to have a good direct drive starter for the 11" clutch/727 sitting in the back of my truck that I will not be using.

DI, are you 100% fer sher about that? I could swear I've seen direct-drive, 9-tooth starters in the high mount location on trucks/vans as well as from time to time on US-market passenger cars (leaving aside the wider use of 9-tooth DD starters outside the US).

You probably won't catch one outside of Wildcat, or a very large Mopar only junkyard anymore... I only gave the most available combination seen regularly in local US pull a parts... if our original poster did find a high mount 9 tooth direct drive in a truck, I'd like a picture of the find, it would be very unique.

To be fair, I'm going back at least 20 years to remember last seeing this what I describe in a yard.

I have done OK with mini starters from Pull a Parts...

if you get one, soon after the purchase, take it to your local AZ or ADV autoparts, they will check it for free..

if its not good take it back.

The pull a part mini starter I had in the 83 D150 lasted 3 years before it failed, I then used the 25.00 pull a part mini to cover the 40.00 core charge on a new mini starter. The pull a part mini starter that I put in the 68 Barracuda 8 years ago is still doing fine.
