I was out puttering around on the Dart today, putting new motor mounts in, changing the oil, etc., and I noticed the manifold heat valve was frozen.

I got it loose, but it's far from "free." Does anyone know which direction is open on one of these? Until it's totally free, I want to make sure it's letting the exhaust straight out.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, this is on a '65 170.

The top edge lays toward the block the bottom edge towards the wheel so clockwise will open counter to close.

Great! Thanks! It looks like it was frozen shut.

Just to make sure I'm thinking straight here...if I rotate it counterclockwise, all exhaust is going out the pipe, and not being diverted up to the carb. Is that right?

Closing causes the exhaust to exit through the exhaust pipe opening allows the exhaust to circulate between the exhaust pipe and to heat the carburetor. Once the area heats up the exhaust "Valve" will close directing all exhaust out.
