Same trans and motor mounts.
Inspected exhaust and all is good.

Well that leaves a few possibilties. Either the engine is out of balance now from cutting the pistons. Or your torque convertor has a weight on it for a 360. Or the front shaft in the tranny is bent. Or the flex plat is bent.


I guess there is still other things that could be, but these would be the most expected at this point.

At a minimum, pull off the TC (Torque Converter) inspection cover (dust shield) and look at the converter for added weight(s), a large weight or no weight is a bad sign, a small weight shows the converter was balanced and weight adjusted.

While you are down there, remove all the TC to flex plate bolts and spin the converter's locating hub (nose) in the crank's pilot hole. See if the TC spins smoothly and on center. Push the converter up & down to see how much slop is in the fitment point.

I have seen some converters with an undersize locating hub. If so, I will carefully start all the TC to FP mounting bolts, draw then down but not tight, wiggle the TC into a "best guess" center point, then tighten all the bolts and test for a change in the vibration.

I don't think it's out of balance.

Cutting the pistons should have taken the same weight off each one.

And balancing an inline 6 is getting the pistons,rods and crank throws all the same since an inline 6 is inherently in balance.

Worst case would be the balance of a stock engine if the pistons vary a bit in weight.

Found no large or small weights on the front flat of the converter. Called Midwest converters and they said the balancing weight is behind the starter gear likely where it would be difficult to see. Anyway, no 360 weight on this converter. :cry: Loosened the 4 converter nuts and the converter won't move up, down, side to side. Back and forth, but not any other way. Retightened. Same vibration. Checked lash and it was good. (.016,.016)
The more I play with it the more I think its the motor mounts or trans mount. When I changed from the pancake style to the spool type and still had the stock motor, there was a big difference. It was alot rougher. I think that if I mess around with the mounts (loosen and push one way or the other), I'll get it back to rough but not very rough.
Has anyone done the pancake to spool conversion with the same motor and found that the motor can be felt more? (vibration transfer) Maybe the inserts in these mounts were put in wrong from the "factory". I bought the whole mount about 1 yr ago. Trans mount is the same and looks to be in good shape. I assume when a trans mount is bad it falls apart?

Took car to the trans shop for a second opinion. He say something is out of balance. He thinks its the converter.
The plan is to remove the trans to get at the converter. Then drive about an hour north of here to a converter builder and have them check it. (free) :D Then drive back and reinstall it (rebalanced) with a new flex plate that is waiting for me at Napa. All this in about 6 hours to make the track tonight.

Recently (last fall) I did a complete motor rebuild with a few mods and installed new spool type mounts. I had also changed the transmission mount. The vibration I had freaked me out. I went every where having it checked, Tranny shop, Les Schwab, several automotive shops, muffler shops, etc..

Conclusion is that the new rubber mounts are so stiff that they take awhile to soften up.
I had asked SlantSix Dan about it and he says that doesn't happen and something else is wrong like torque converter, exhaust system, etc... just like the advice you got from Doc and others.

However, what I have found, since November is that they have softened up alot in the last 17,000 miles. It is not a smooth as the original mounts yet, but at least the steering wheel doesn't vibrate out of my hands anymore. The windows still shake when it is in gear idling at 650 - 600 rpm, no shake out of gear anymore. It is getting alot better with time. I guess the new rubber is much harder.
Some racers out here say the poly mounts are even worse, they never soften up.

So, I would just drive it and not worry about it and good luck racing!

There where no weights on the converter at all. The converter balance place checked it and found it to be 110 grams out in the shell. :shock: :shock: :shock: Just to give some of you an idea how much that is out, the guy used some foul language. It whent something like this: "Holy F***. Theres your F***ing vibration". He added (4) 24 gram weights and some weld and it came down to about 15.
Its back in :D and its as smooth as silk.
Its raining right now but it looks like its clearing up. Going to get cleaned up and head to the track. (With long pants of course) :D

Well, I am glad to see something finally go your way. I dont think I have ever see a torque convertor out that far either. But it just goes to show, how the real workings are in the small details. Good Luck at the track.

Well took the car for another run. The sun was down and the temp was about 85 degrees with NO heat soak in the motor.
I also think the 15.6 run had the A/C running. I can't remember turning it off.
Today it was off.

1/8 mile 9.61
330ft 6.37
60ft 2.24

I think the A/C was on before. I don't think the engine being colder and the outdoor temp being lower would make up that much.
No more test runs. I don't want the lose my 14 second car. :D

Back from the track. The results above are from a timing computer. Today the results are from the track. Looking at the results I not sure if the computer is correct. The car feels alot faster today at the track. But that might just be the heart pounding at the line. :D
