You are right, Rick had 62 pts for the weekend - quite a haul.

Anyone can run a race and not count it toward their points total, IF they tell the race coordinator or similar head honcho that they don't want to count points BEFORE they start eliminations.

Also, anyone can count the best FOUR of a possible total of SEVEN races toward their year-end total. Yes, the way the rules are now, you can count points up to 7 races, and after that nothing counts.

I have entered and counted 5 races so far this year, so I'll have to make decisions about which ones I want to enter or count points for during the rest of the season - only 2 left.

Lou

Yes Rob I did earn 62 points for the weekend. It was just a typo. Lou had on up in the note.

As for Charlie. He may attend more than 7 races this year and he was going to drive an unfamiliar car (larry's), so he did not want to count the points from this one at Elk Creek. He did communicate this to Lou and I and others there at the race. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification. Sorry I'm a bit fuzzy lately. My insomnia has been at an all time high for the last week and a half, so I'm a little slow (er than usual  )

So Charlie gets ZERO points for Elk Creek, correct? (Not even the one attendance point)

As I now understand the 4 to 7 races... You can compete in and count points up to 7 races. You simply take the best 4 of those 7 for your points total and the remaining 3 races you just get the 1 point for attendance.

It's only if you plan to attend MORE than 7 races where you need to plan ahead a little and save your best chances at earning points for those 7 races...

I really shouldn't try to figure this out and post my ignorance on the internet until I'm able to get some sleep. Once I've gotten some sleep I can post all the ignorance I want.

By Golly I think you got it!! Except I'm not sure about the 1 point. I think he gets one attendance point. But maybe not. Oh Seymour?? Help us out here!

Rick

PS Rob, get some sleep, it will all work out!

Lou and I must have been typing at the same time above. He is just a little faster than me!

I don't think you get the 1pt for attendance either, but I'm not positive.

My thoughts are we should look at the seven race limit at the Banquet this year. We came up with double race weekends in part to save money for the racers and make the pull more worthwhile to attend distant events. In doing that we made ten races out of the five events. I guess we will see if the seven race max will effect car count in the last three events. Lou I think you will find the one point has always been awarded on all events. And if I am not mistaken one year the championship was decided by those singles.

I checked a later issue of the SSRN that had the points rules and it states that one point for race attendance will be awarded for only seven races.
tks

The 7 race limit was added to rules somewhere around 2003-2004, to cut down on the rich retired guys killing everyone by going to every race. Prior to that, the single pts would have counted.

Lou, I dont know any rich retired guys in our series in our series do you?
I guess if we did the rule served it purpose and caused them to quit.

From my perspective in 2003, anyone who could afford to make 7+ races towing a racecar on a trailer was very rich. Maybe $10k/yr in towing+race gas and racecar parts and entry fees? At that time, that included quite a few racers (6-8?). Maybe none of them were technically retired. It was pretty much all of the box car racers, as I recall. My apologies if I am offending anyone here, this is just my recollection.

Yes, most of them seem to not be racing with us because maybe they are not so rich now (post 2008 ills), can't/won't afford gas for towing, or decided they would spend their money on something else.

In other words, I think they quit for other reasons... Any other ideas why?

"Rich" is quite a relative term. Christine and I can afford to have fun and own a house near our work, and that makes us rich in my book.

We should certainly discuss lifting the 7 race limit for next year!

Lou

I know Mike quit going to all the races because he got burned out on travelling alone after Blaine switched jobs.

He's also having a ball racing the stocker. There is a crew that always travels together, that makes it a lot more fun.

Thanks, Dennis, for that perspective on Mike. If I had to travel alone long distances for every race, I might not do it either.

One of the big reasons I go to Slant races is to hang out with the Slanted Family. I know I'll have fun (almost) every time whether I win anything or not.
