Yep..
I would love to trade the 80 sedan for a Super nice Beige 79 sedan but I will have to wait until the right car comes along.

You know, I have always wanted to get a Volare Coupe, put the front clip off of an 81-83 Imperial on it, make a big wing for the back and call it a Plymouth Volare "Superbird."

79 Duster Fuel Tank Expierence 11-30-11

Well Here is a Little Pictorial of some Rust I ran into When I Removed the Tank of the Duster Last week. It had a small leak at the top of the tank only when it was above 3/4 full - Then the Gas gauge started to read 1/4 all of the time.. So it was time to Take the tank down.
Got a new tank and sending unit from rock auto..
This is probably the 3rd Tank I have had on the car... It was Repaired with lead and Sealed inside probably 8 or so years ago... I "painted it with Grease" all over and Replaced the Stock water holding Gas tank Pad with Old sections of cut up intertube..
Due to the Crappy placement / design of the Tank and The supporting hardware the Left Upper side of the tank gets a lot of splash and wash from the road , and it will sit on top of the tank.. causing rust.
This car has 201,000 Miles on it now So my first major Patch goes in the trunk on the 32 year old car that gets a lot of salt.. I dont think there are too many others out there using f bodies as daily drivers for 16 years in Salty weather...

Uh Oh... RUST.. I have a full Trunk mat from a mirada so I never see the trunk floor of my car at all.. :-0
Worst Part about this is that the Rust ate the Upper Tank mount area.. I had an old F body Trunk floor in the Shed....
Cut out a Patch Panel From the old trunk floor in the shed.
Comparison... Cut out Piece vs New patch Piece..
Hole in floor...
On the Replacement Piece, I welded up the "crap Catcher" that Ma Mopar made that Funnels dirt, grime, saltwater right above your gas tank..
Repair Complete..

with full respect intended,
if Mopar gave an award for the most weld rod put into a set of vehicles by the owner / driver,, you would certainly be in the running. 
how did you learn to weld so proficiently?,, I would like to learn that skill, I thought about taking a class at a local trade school or community college,,
what do you recommend?

John I learned by doing..
Practiced a bit with the old stick welder at home - Took Metal shop in High school - Did alot of stick welding there.. Then Mygot my mig and migin' is easy.. at least on steel - Will be attempting AL soon.
Starting to teach myself TIG now.. And I would like to take some welding classes but Cant yet due to time / job restrictions.

I had just finished reading the 36 pages of the Ruster valent epic,, don't know how I missed that, but had. Found it linked to a oil pump question. In those 36 pages, when not cutting something off the car, you were welding something on,
Then found this thread,,
all that metal work must have something to do with being in the neighborhood of the Steel City.
anyway, that is an admirable skill.

Very cool!
I have also owned three F-bodies at one time. The first was a '79 Volare sedan with a super six. Then I purchased the '78 Volare coupe that I'm driving now. The I bought a '78 Volare wagon with a 318 V8, that I was going to use to convert my '78 coupe to V8 power.
Now I have the '78 Volare coupe, and an '80 Duster (Volare) coupe.
Mine were not all the same color though.
Way cool man!

That's Right Bill!
One Quart Lasts 10+ years on these 3 cars!
My tank and New Sending unit arrived from Rock auto.. All Shiny and ready to install.. But I had to put a Heavy coat of chassis Grease on there to Keep All the salt and rot at bay! Pics Below:
New Spectra Premium Tank - appears to be good quality from Rock auto for ~$79.00

A Dab of grease where the strap contacts the Tank ( i might come back here and Put a piece of of intertube to reduce metal to metal contact.)
Tank installed - - The original tank pad is long gone - I tend to think they can harbor a bit of moisture too, so I replaced it with a bunch of cut up old tire intertubes..
