Don't get me wrong...I love this site to death, come often and have learned alot here. But does it seem to anyone else like loading and navigation have really slowed to a crawl here lately? I'm not experiencing this anyplace else, so I don't think it's anything on my end.

Don't mean to be an unappreciative whiner...I know I'D certainly have trouble finding the time to maintain a site with a schedule full of family, job and cars. Thanks for doing it!

The site will get slower as more messages are added, but I find that the main problem comes from users linking directly in to the message board without going through the main page (www.slantsix.org). Unfortunately, better software to run the board costs about $300 - $500. I can't put out that much cash and given the lack of response for the interactive database, I'm sure the users of this board can't help with that.

Make sure you enter through www.slantsix.org . The newest messages will be at the top of the page. You don't have to wait for all the messages to display before you click on a particular message. If you want to watch a particular thread you can have replies e-mailed to you if you have posted a response, otherwise, use the search function instead of saving a particular message in your favorites. If you enter the board from a favorite message that you saved, the board must download EVERY message posted after that one before you can go on.

Also, don't use the BACK button on your browser. Using the "Return to Index" link is faster and will send you back to the same place you were before reading a message.

I'd like to make a donation to the site. I know it's a big headache to deal with, but we all count on it. I couldn't have got my car running and I'm sure it would'n have been as good without you guys. I'm layed off for the next month, but I send you a little help when I get back to work. if all of the active members sent $20 you'd have plenty of cash. Who do we make the check out to and where do I send it?

Send all contributions to:

I appreciate the thought (and $$$). The cost of the board is currently about $10/month. Not much, but I pay for it (and paid for the original setup) by myself. I am glad the viewers can get such good information here. We all need to realize that in this day and age, we all expect to get so much off of the Internet for free, but someone pays for it. A lot of this information would be hard to get anywhere, even if you offered to pay for it. So if the board has helped you out, think about sending $5.00. It will go a long way toward keeping this resource available to us. And if I do get enough, I will purchase the software needed to keep the parts database online. I think this could be one of our greatest assets. Many thanks to those who contribute to the content of this board.

Your WebMaster, Chuck

I always come in through the front page.
Then what I do is start paging down and when I see something I am interested in reading, I right click on it and "Open it in a new window". I find that this is very, very fast, and when I am done reading all the links in that thread, I just close the window. Usually, by the time I have read one or two threads this way the main page has fully loaded. Hope this helps.

That's a great tip Dan, I keep forgetting about that right side mouse button!

That's a good way to do it. The overall speed is really a function of the software used, but the newer posts should come up fairly quickly.

Hey Chuck, Is there any way with this software to chop off old posts and put them in the archive? I show this index as being 1.3MEGS! I feel sorry for new dialup users trying to down load that for the 1st time :(

Yes, I suppose it's time. I have had trouble with the archiving, but I think I have it now.

NOTE:
The archiving board *may* use the same preferences as the main board. That means that the archive board might only show the last 12 months of posts, so you won't see them all until you change the time period or use the search function! When I checked it, it shows the last 60 months, but as many of us know, the preferences do not work well.

I have started doing the following:

Start to load the site and kill the transfer. Select the "set preferences" and select only new messages from last login. This keeps the messages down to around 20 or 30 or so...

I archived a few thousand posts but the database didn't go down much in size. I hope it is a bit faster.

That should work really well for regular users. The board should save that setup for you, but...

One thing, when you change the preferences, click on "View Message Index" and not "Return to Index". The later will not save the changes.

Post subject: Change setup on Board? (Fri Jun 07, 2002 6:41 pm) Reply with quote

I could set the default to the last 30 days. This would help new users. If you have set preferences (and if it works!) you can set yours to 1 month ant try that. Be sure to click on "View Message Index" and not "Return to Index" after setting preferences. This worked when I tried it.

Nor will the other. I have tried both ways, the preferences are not changed!

As I said, it doesn't always work. Unfortunately, I would have to be on your computer to figure out why. It works on all of mine. I can send you a remote control program to let me connect to your computer if you want me to see if I can find the problem.
