Instead of giving a big, long “soap box” message about the recent developments reguarding this site, I will “cut to the chase” and say that now is the time to send a “donation” (money), buy a few bumper stickers or just plain send a nice thank-you or letter of encouragement to the www.slantsix.org webmaster Chuck Rivers.

Chuck created this website for all Slantsixers to enjoy and he did the set-up work just because he likes the Slant Six.
Chuck Rivers has put-in countless “behind the screen” hours and cash out of his pocket to get the site where it is today. Please understand that not everyone can do this kind of stuff and it is not free, someone has to pay to “keep the electrons moving”. We feel that www.slantsix.org is the place to find the “bleeding edge” of Slant Six performance and technical information, I feel we all should help to keep this website going.

Chuck is now faced with some hard decisions, lots of work and additional expense over the next few weeks if we are going to continue www.slantsix.org in a “bigger & better” way. The plan is to get some new message board software installed and find another ISP to host our website. After that task is done and working, we would like to find a way to “convert” all the current messages into the new message board format. This is no small task and there are people in the business world who get “big money” for doing this kind of work, with some help, Chuck hopes he can do it.

So now is the time for all of us, whom have benefited and enjoyed www.slantsix.org to help keep this part of the SL6 community together. Many of you have already stepped forward with technical help and $$. For everyone else, the time is now to do what you can. It boils down to keeping our webmaster Chuck “motivated” to do a bunch of work for us. If we are unsuccessful, he will have little choice but to “pull the plug” on this message board.
We only have a few weeks to do alot of stuff so please do not wait, send Chuck a check right now.

Here is Chuck’s mailing address, it is also listed if you click on the bumper sticker ad on the www.slantsix.org home page.
Let’s look forward to a “bigger & better” website!

Post subject: A message board program to consider (Fri Oct 11, 2002 7:20 pm) Reply with quote

Doc and Chuck,

Another board I frequent (Modern Musclecars) recently switched to phpBB. This board seems to be as good as many commercial ones while being open source. It will get around loading a huge index file (it's up to what, 1Mb now?) and the scroll for miles list by keeping only 20 or so active threads on the first page.

I'll see if I can provice some financial help too. The slant six Internet community is about the only resource out there to help with building this engine.

I agreee- phpBB would be a great way to go.

Being a /6 newbie, this site has helped me out many times. My donation is in the mail.

Thanks goes out to Doug for his post and time on this board. The bottom line is that we have arrived! By this I mean that the traffic generated by this site is so large that my ISP is concerned, which is good news and bad news. We are overloading his server to the point that the other domains hosted on his server are suffering! And as already been said numerous times, our board is slow. Lordy me, what hath we wrought?

I am very pleased at the content of this board and the professionalism of our readers. Now we are headed into the "big time" with an average of over 250 hits PER HOUR on this board.

I am pleased to see the posts about phpBB. I have downloaded it and I am seeing what is involved in setting it up. A lot of changes that have been due for a long time are finally being forced to the forefront. It would also be nice for the board to at least pay for itself so all the expenses don't come out of my pocket. I am truely amazed that we have gotten to this level.

I hope to resolve this issue by the end of this month. Hopefully I can get my ISP to allow me time to make these changes and help me come up with solutions. Doug and I will keep you posted of our progress. I believe that this board is too good a resource to let it die.

Let us know about Paypal? That would be a great and simple method for each of us to make a contribution. If paypal would work for you,you could just post a note once a Quarter or whenver needed, and say it's time for each of you to send a little $$$. Everyone who depends on this list and the knowlege of those who frequent it, should be glad to contribute!! I know I will.
If paypal is not OK, I'll mail my check Tuesday.

Thanks,

Rick

Thanks Andrew. There sure are some great folks on this site.

You can send donations through Paypal. Go to paypal.com and use cpr@omnipages.com for the e-mail address. That is a great way to donate. It makes it quick and easy for both of us! Thanks for the suggestion.

Along with the others here, I will send Chuck something through PayPal. If not out of place, however, may I ask what would be appropriate? Or should I ask: What is needed? Other sites have a membership with dues to defer the costs. It would be helpful if Chuck could come up with a long range game plan where the cost of running this site, in whatever venue, could be approximated. It is not fair to have one individual bear all the expenses while everyone else enjoys the advantages of this site. I for one would be willing to pay in return for the privilages afforded within.

Regards

Mitch

I haven't posted much at all, but I enjoy reading this board on an almost daily basis. I would like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication and only wish I had found this sight 10 years ago. I would also be willing to pay dues if it comes to that. My contribution, though small, is waiting for the postal workers to come back to work. I hope that all goes well and would like to again say thanks for all you do for us slanted type folks!
