Post subject: Bay Area Slant Sixers (BASS) "Tour" 2011 ????? (Mon Jan 17, 2011 11:10 am) Reply with quote

Hi All,

I just came up with a great idea - or at least I think it's great!!!

Very Happy

I used to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and have been lucky enough to meet a couple other cool Slant Six guys (Menko and Doc). I know there are tons more - and I was thinking it would be cool to have some sort of "meet" - I know that there are some every year - I went to one a few years back and it was a lot of fun!!!

I'm now out in Sonora, CA with my new wife, and I'm feeling kind of isolated from all the social stuff out in the Bay Area. What I was thinking is this:

1) We get a bunch of Bay Area Slant Six owners to meet somewhere in the Bay Area.

2) Everyone drives as a group out to Sonora (about 2.5 hours), we meet more Slant Sixers on the way.

3) We eventually end up in Murphys (about 20 miles from Sonora) and do some RESPONSIBLE wine tasting.

4) We arrange for rooms in the Murphys area, so nobody has to drive.

5) We all return home the next day.

If this sounds fun - let's start planning it. I'm a lawyer, and I know one of the local winery owners too, and I know how to pull enough strings so that we can get designated parking and the "red carpet" treatment in Murphys.

Thoughts????

Kevin

Sounds fun...
As with any new event, it takes a "champion" (organizer) and some promotion work... then you "see what happens".
The first step... pick a location & date.
Next step, make some flyers and get the word out there.
(I can help with that effort)

Awesome!

Yes, I've done some organizing work in the Gun Rights community. This sounds easy compared to wrangling 60 to 70 angry gun owners at a local city council meeting!!!!

Very Happy

Let me put my thinking cap on - I'm going to try and pick a date that doesn't conflict with any other events that folks like us would likely want to be at (car shows, etc.). . .

Probably something that happens BEFORE it gets up in the 90 degree range out here would be good too!!!!

Murphys will probably be the destination - it's up here in the Gold Country, about a 2.5 hour drive from most of the Bay Area, and has an excellent array of very nice restaurants, shops and wineries. It's also a nice scenic drive from Sonora.

If we try and hit during the off-season, we can probably get good room rates, and also a nice group discount.

My wife knows some people - time to call in some favors. . .

I'll keep everyone posted - and also - thanks for being able to help on this - it should totally be fun!!!!!

Hello

That sounds like a cool idea. I'm in the Nevada City, Grass Valley area and that would be a fun drive to Murphys.
I also like the idea of not having the event when its hotter than hell.
I've got the box checked for posted replies. Good luck.

Awesome! My wife and I know the manager of the Murphys Hotel - so that will likely be the destination, etc. . .

I'm going to contact him as soon as I get a chance and see what kind of room rates he can give to a group, whether he can do a prix fix dinner, etc. . .

If we had rooms/dinner there - then we could all be downtown for wine tasting or ??? . They also have their own parking lot for our cars. . .

This should be fun!!!

Let me know. Sounds like it could be fun.
I might have to bring some newer and some old home made wine for a pre-dinner tuneup. Surprised)

Awesome guys! I talked to Doug last weekend while I was down in his neck of the woods - looks like a lot of people would be interested!!!

I'm going to start planning an itinerary and checking on lodging, etc. . .

Hi guys

Was wondering if there is anything new about the Murphys Mopar run?
Sure sounded like fun.

Yes! Talked to Doug - thinking that a simple event on a non-busy Summer day in Murphys would be cool.

Let me make some calls - the basic idea would be that we meet in the Bay Area somewhere and drive out there as a group - then maybe have a nice lunch, etc. . .

Very Happy

Hello

I'm not complaining about something we haven't even tried but, the original premise was going to be doing this when it was not hot (such as in summer) and I had thought it would be an overnighter with wine tasting and dinner. Did you find out something that would make this scenario unlikely or too hard to organize?
Once again, not complaining but if I go wine tasting its a given I won't be driving afterwards.

We can do one earlier if you want - but the "overnight" issue is a change based on feedback from another group I am working with, and a conversation with Doug - who suggested I keep it simple, this time out.

Right now I am planning a large (over 100 people) retreat for a gun rights group I work with. We actually had a lot of people complain that they could not afford the hotel rates for an overnight trip. When you do these things, sometimes you are damned if you do - and damned if you don't.

What I am going to do here is make it a "day trip" - but obviously folks can make hotel reservations if they wish. I don't want to make it complicated - at least for this first one.

I was just thinking a nice catered lunch at a local hotel (with a large parking lot downtown where we can safely keep our cars) and maybe some informal wine tasting or something like that after we eat.

Even that will require that I do a lot of work on this end. For the gun rights group, I'm actually out $600 - since I used my own personal money to secure the rooms. These events are not easy, and I really just want this to be simply, easy, and fun - for everyone.

Next year, we can expand if we want. Let's just start small this year.

Yes, count me in if you plan a day trip to Murphys. I am always interested in a nice drive and seeing people's cars. I'll just (personally) plan on leaving the wine out of the equation. I am more likely to be up for it also if it doesn't happen to be blazing hot.

Sounds good! I'm not much of a win drinker either, actually.

Very Happy

More something for the wife - she knows one of the owners of a local winery and always stops by their tasting room.

Agreed on heat issue - my radiator is still stock - which as you know = not good - especially with the engine mods that Doug did. LOL!!!

Let me look at weather trends out here (just moved here) - thinking a day when the average temp is mid 70's would be perfect.

I'm not too worried about my car overheating, I'm more worried about me overheating. My car only has 60/4 airconditioning and its about a 125 mile trip one way for me to Murphys on winding roads (Unless I want to go clear down below Folsom and thats about 146 miles). Just wouldn't be (as) fun if it was boiling hot.
I start chickening when it gets over about 85 degrees depending on what is involved.
I have been looking for slant six activities or Mopar activities and they really seem to dry up after September to at least April around here.
Seems like a shame to waste all those perfect days in between.
As long as it isn't hot or raining I'd be glad to go.
