Post subject: My thoughts on Records... (Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:49 pm) Reply with quote

So, I'm sitting here pondering life as a Slant 6 Drag Racer and my recent success of getting the GodsRods Duster II running again... Rolling Eyes

My thoughts start to wander over to the Challenger and with all the talk lately about records I looked at my options... (Yes, I'm getting waaay ahead of myself. What else is new? Laughing )

The Challenger holds the 1/8 mile A/Alcohol record at 7.355. I checked a couple 1/8 to 1/4 conversions and it looks like that should equate to roughly 11.47 or so...

It will take me some time to get used to the car and get things dialed in, of course, but here are some ideas on how to get my name in the record books...

1. The 7.355 was set at a weight of 2300 for car and driver. I estimate I've got right about a 70 pound advantage over that just by showing up. If 100 pounds is worth a tenth, let's just say we're looking at .07 advantage for an 11.40 (7.31)... Current A/Alcohol 1/4 record is 11.441 Shocked

2. Several people have said that by simply sealing the hood scoop to the engine it should pick up at least a tenth... 11.30 (7.25) Very Happy

3. What about this new engine? What do you think that's worth?... Wink

That's three things that are either already done or a simple fix.

If I swap the Six Pack scoop for a more aerodynamic cowl induction while I'm at it...

If I replace the grille with a piece of plexiglass to seal off the front for less drag...

If I cut off the unneeded funny car roll bar hoops for some more weight savings...

If I find the time to do all of these things instead of sitting here typing this... Rolling Eyes

Hey, wife's at work, kids are in bed, garage is 5 miles away... I gotta have some fun! Laughing

Well, I suppose if you do that I'd be forced to switch over to gas from time to time in order to keep things fair and interesting. Wink

(I've got a full gas system for the car as well. Very Happy )

While I was working on the Challenger last night I looked over the front where the grill mounts.

I see some weight reduction there and it looks like I can also bring the fenders in a bit for a smaller front. Replacing the grill with a piece of plexiglass looks fairly straight forward too.

There's another tenth or two right there! Shocked Laughing

You're gonna hurt yourself again! Shocked Laughing

How much weight have you taken out of the Valiant so far? What's the current weight? And now you're adding more weight with nitrous and Air Tabs... Confused Laughing

I'd like to see your car run in person. I'd like it even more to see your car run in person... within a second... of My Rear Bumper! Shocked Laughing

I'll be sure and let y'all know if/when I finally get this thing out to a track and run something worthy of typing about. Laughing

I've seen Mark's car run in person. It is one of the best leaving leaf spring cars I have ever seen, and I've seen a ton of them. Very Happy

You better pack a sammich junior, you've picked a pretty tough fight here. Rolling Eyes

Yeah, right! That's debatable... Rolling Eyes

Mark has definitely proven his and his car's ability.

I'm just a "Smoke Blowin' Poser", but I'm trying to graduate to bein' a real racer... Wink

Made some more progress at the garage tonight. Not a lot, but a little...

Post subject: One step closer... (Tue Mar 13, 2012 7:14 am) Reply with quote

Well, I'm at least one step closer to a record... Laughing

I'm no longer just a "Smoke Blowin' Poser"! Shocked

The GodsRods Duster II has made a couple passes. Nowhere close to any records with this one, but at least I've been down a dragstrip a couple times in a Slant 6 vehicle. Very Happy

I'll do a couple tweaks to the Duster and try to get out to as many test & tunes as I can.

I've started to pay a little more attention to the Challenger lately and will do more to it now that the Duster is up and running. Wink

I have until June to prove Mark wrong:

Challenger ways 2050 without driver according to Norm.

There are a couple areas where more weight can be taken out still. Wink
