Do you guys feel a need to balance rear drag slicks.. I never see any wheel weights on rear tires at the Race track.. maybe folks just have stick on type weights?

I do balance them using stick on weights on aluminum wheels. But if Will gets away without them just think of all that lead weight you could save.

Why would you not balance any tire that is going to go over 100 MPH? Just wondering

The weights go to the inside of the wheel, so you probably wouldn't see them unless they were off the car. All slicks should be balanced, 100 MPH might not seem fast, but try going 170 on an unbalanced set of slicks.

Why would you not balance a tire turning over 100 mph (over 1220 rpm)? You balance the front tires, and they generally have less out of balance mass. Do you balance the tires on your street car, that go a lot slower?

We balance a lot of slicks at work. We use a static balance with tape weights on the inside center of the wheel. Than also put racers tape over the weights for added protection. The bigger the slick the worse they are. I run 90 pound super swampers on my truck and run lead balance and equal balance ( an internal sand balance) they run smooth as glass up to 80mph. Nothing takes the fun out of driving like a out of balance tire.

Greg, When you do,using stick on weights on the inside of the rim,,Clean entire area well and put duct tape over the weight.Don't know if it is required but have seen this practice for years. I use that method...

Yea, My 10.5 outlaw friends balance theirs. Guess I have been missing this one. The tire guy said why bother???

That's what my old tire guy said. Notice I said "old", not current. If engine balancing, frees up a little horse power and helps reliability, why not a tire. Would you run a crankshaft 2 ounces out of balance on a 2 inch center? Why run a tire more than that on a 15 inch center

I didn't balance the 22's, but the more I think about it, the 25's will definitely get the treatment. The 28's will also. At the high end with the 22's, I got a lot of vibration. They were spinning pretty good at 90 and 100 mph.

I was looking at cars at the track, and noticed that the successful machines all had balance weights.
Good stuff to notice, though none of it really registered until this thread! thanks for asking the question!

Currently running my balanced street tires, and I don't feel near the vibration I was experiencing with the slicks.

Yes balance them if you are using a spool in the differntal the slicks shoud be no more than 1/2 inch differance tire circumfrance for both tires.
