I think our Mason Dixon race has had the largest car counts on the East side the last two years. We had 16 cars this year. And last year we had 14 I believe. I am gonna beat the bushes to have 20 cars in 2012. You need to come East and bring Rob! Laughing I think Clay City had the largest ever car count on the east Coast some years back. With Rob's hard work, and if he can get a couple of his cars running, Clay City may hit 20 cars too!! Let's hope so. Hope to bring the whole Covalt Clan next year. 3 maybe 4 cars!!

Rick Very Happy

Hey Gene! We're glad you made it out! Sorry there wasn't any "hangin' out under the big shade trees" as promised. Sad Everyone kinda hunkered down to keep warm on Saturday. Did you get a chance to talk to many of the other Slant 6 racers? I was chasing my tail so much I couldn't keep track. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Yes, Clay City used to be THE East Coast race. It still holds the record on the East Coast with 24 cars in 2002! Shocked

Rick definitely has Mason-Dixon running as the top East Coast race these days. Wink

We'll see what we can do to get Clay City back to its former glory. Very Happy

I'll ask Elaine for copies of the ones she posted on Facebook. Here's a Link to the ones I took. My starting line photography is severely lacking, but I got quite a few in the staging lanes.

I'll embed some of the images here later with captions.

I asked the track photographer to get pics of the cars on the starting line on Sunday and had him send me shots of the Winner and Runner Up. He's "old school" and just does prints, so I couldn't review anything or buy rights to digital photos. I'll post his contact info soon so that folks can contact him if needed.

Just wanted to tell everybody that my family had a great time at Clay City. Talking with all the racers makes me wish I was racing and brings back alot of memories. My next trip to Clay City I will bring long pants and shoes, not shorts and flip flops. Rob, I know you put alot of work in this and if I can help in any way,.................call me!!

Hey Charles!

You all coming to Clay City really touched me! We were all glad you came!

Yeah, you were definitely dressed for warmer weather! Shocked I'll see what I can do about the weather for next year. Laughing

Please plan on coming to the Reunion/Banquet this year if you can. It will be in February. We'll try to lock in plans as early as possible to give everyone time to plan.

I'm gonna call you even if I don't need anything! Very Happy

Post subject: Some pics (Wed Oct 05, 2011 12:59 pm) Reply with quote

Here are some more pics. I added the pics Elaine Foster posted on Facebook to my photo album in the link above.

Awesome Reunion with the Myers, Hambys and Fosters! Very Happy I think this is what gave Ron Hamby the idea of a Banquet / Reunion. Wink

Beautiful sunset behind Ryan Covalt's Dart

Ryan & Whitney Covalt used the Clay City race as part of their 7 year anniversary vacation trip. It was great to have them there! Next year we need the whole Covalt Clan at Clay City! Very Happy

Meril & Ella Bruner have celebrated a few more than 7 happy years together. Wink They are always a joy to be around.

Rodney & Alanna Hargis were smiling despite the cold on Saturday and having Larry Chesney put Rodney on the trailer. They are a dedicated racing family.

What!? You want to see some cars? Shocked Okay, fine! Here ya go! Very Happy

Ryan Covalt won the race on Saturday in this beautiful '72 Dart Swinger running a 4 speed! He was wickedly consistent running 15.10-15 all weekend. He and Whitney towed an enclosed trailer with their ATV all the way from Pennsylvania and spent a week prior to the race enjoying some time off while celebrating their 7 year anniversary.

Bob Rogers was the promoter of the Clay City race for many years, but never actually raced with us! Shocked Well, now he's back with this beautiful '68 Valiant and having a blast racing and visiting with old friends. Wink

This is Rodney Hargis' '62 Lancer named "Grasshopper" that he has driven to two National Championships!

Here's Larry Chesney's '64 Dart that he has run for many years. He was able to dash Rodney's hopes of a third National Championship by putting him out first round both days.

This is the Scamp that Norm Foster thrashed on to make it to Clay City. It belongs to his grandson Logan. Once Logan moves back a little closer they'll have some fun wrenchin' sessions together working on this one. Wink

I'll put more in another post. Stand by... Very Happy

You asked for it! Here are some more... Very Happy

Ron Hamby's '66 Dart that has taken him to 3 National Championships!! Very Happy

Lukus Bruner's '62 Valiant "Half Hemi". Meril built this car many years ago. Lukus has taken up most of the welding in the Bruner shop lately. Need a roll cage...? Wink

This '80 Dodge Ram 50 Pick 'Em Up Truck is another one of Meril's creations. He named it "Funny Truck" because he moved the wheelbase around like the first altered wheelbase Mopars back in the day! Shocked Very Happy

The other Pick 'Em Up Truck racing with us at Clay City was yet another one of Meril and Lukus' creations. This is the original "Slantkoda" now belonging to Lou Madsen. He rolled in Sunday morning just in time to unload all the tires/wheels he hauled down for me and go right to staging for time trials. He was in such a hurry he didn't even bother to take off his helmet as he added oil after his drive down from VA. No, he didn't drive all the way from VA with the helmet on. Rolling Eyes (Did you Lou? Shocked Laughing )

Here's a better look at Meril's "Funny Truck" that carried him to the win on Sunday. Take a close look at the front fender and length of the bed in front of the rear tire... "Funny Truck" indeed! Wink

Inquiring minds wanted to know about the damage to Ron and Kay Hamby's Dart on Saturday. Hopefully just a couple burnt wires and a good clean up and they'll be ready to rumble again!

Greg Ondayko was a happy man Sunday when his "Ruster" Valiant picked up exactly 2/10ths right off the trailer in the good Clay City air! Shocked He went on to Runner Up on Sunday too! Very Happy

The Ladies of Slant 6 Racing at Clay City 2011! A lot of smiling faces in the nice warm RV. They kept everyone supplied with warm vittles all weekend! Thank you ladies!! Very Happy Very Happy

The GodsRods Duster II Thrash!! Laughing

Almost done. A few action shots next...

Post subject: Action shots!! (Wed Oct 05, 2011 1:54 pm) Reply with quote

Okay,... "Action Shots" might be stretching it a little bit. Rolling Eyes

My starting line photography skills are somewhat (okay, severely) lacking, but here are a few shots of cars actually moving (kinda). Laughing

Ryan Covalt and Greg Ondayko in the burnout box:

Rodney Hargis launching his '62 Lancer:

Meril's "Funny Truck" all twisted up on the launch from the brutal torque of that Leaning Tower of Power. Very Happy

Ron Hamby and Bob Rogers pulling up to the line:

The 2 basically stock cars at Clay City this year. Courtney Bruner in Gary's '64 Valiant and Norm Foster in his grandson Logan's Scamp:

Look at that launch!! Shocked Do I see air under that front tire!? Awesome!! Very Happy

Larry Chesney and Ryan Covalt gettin' ready to go at it:

That's about the best I've got. Anyone else have any to share?

Very nice cars indeed!

It was a wee bit nippy on Saturday. The "Sunny and cold" forecast changed to "Cloudy and colder..." Laughing
