Hello,
Its been a while sense I have posted but I haven't been driving my truck much lately.
I am wondering if anyone would e interested in fuel rails for a slant I am a machinist and am interested in making some fuel rails to sell.
Would anyone be interested?

I might be. I also have 2 alum manifolds I'd like drilled and inj bungs welded in, if you do that.

Wow I'm surprised at the interest
I'm not really good at welding aluminum but I do know that cast aluminum is very difficult to deal with because of gases trapped in the metal and aluminum has to be super clean to weld good.
I'm not sure on a price yet cause I'm not sure exactly what it will involve yet.
I'm thinking of using 304 ss tubing and turning glands for the injectors to fit into with a flare fitting at one end for the supply.
I am open to any suggestions

What about the option of machining everything to fit together out of aluminum and then letting those of us who would like to, weld it together ourselves. Just an idea.
Stainless would also be acceptable. Polished would look great on a show rig as well.

You may want to look at getting some fuel rail "raw stock" and then machine-in the correct injector spacing / mounting holes.
See this ebay listing.

Dumb question
How are the injectors held in the fuel rail?
Are they just a friction fit, thread in?
What would be the best way to get fuel into the rail?
A flare fitting, a barb, a pipe fitting?
The raw stock is a easy option but, it looks very clunky and unattractive to me.
I think stainless is the way to go on a fuel rail it rarely corrodes and is strong and rigid. I have seen aluminum oxidise badly before.

The injectors are not really stuck to the rail, but the rail hold the injectors against the intake.
They are just stuffed into the rail, squeezing an o-ring.
I would prefer a threaded hole in each end of the rail, so I could use whatever kind of fittings I would like.
Remember that you would probably have to have a hole in each end, as you have the fuel in one side, and the regulator, and return on the other end.
Stainless would be nice

Okay I understand the injectors are traped between the rail and intake manifold.
Where could I find the correct hole size for the injector holes in the rail.
I am thinking of using a .750"(19.5mm)OD .620"(15.75mm)ID 304ss tube for the body of the rail, hopefuly I can find a tube that has about the right ID for the injectors to seal inside, as for the fittings for the fuel inlet and fuel regulator I am unsure what would be best I would rather not use pipe threads but, it would be easy.

I measured a stock gm fuel rail, and the diameter is 13.7mm, the cup is 11mm deep.
A peugeot rail was the same, but 10mm deep.
The gm uses little clips to hold the injectors to the rail, so...

I have done a little studying and I think those clips were used in the factory to hold the injectors in the rail before its assembled to the manifold if that is the case then they would not be needed. Right?

Best, easiest was is to get extruded aluminum fuel rail stock from Summit or wherever and just drill it. Can't remember hole specs...

The gm injectors are made by bosch, they are all (well, almost all) the "same" when it comes to the ends, where the rail, and intake bungs go.
No, the clips are not really needed.
IMO, your plan is a bit overkill, it sounds like it would double as a place to lift the engine?
I do agree with Lou, that the extruded rails would be easiest, and maybe even cheaper, but I would personally like a "old looking" rail...but that is just me.

I'm pretty sure the clips are an assembly aid - haven't seen a factory fuel rail where they actually did anything once the rail was on the motor. Once the rail and manifold are together, the injectors can't go anywhere. |
