Wiring '68 back-up lights with '73 transmission?

Hey guys,
Looking for a tip on best way to get my back-up lights working. Car is a '68 Dart with a "new" '73 904 trans. Back-up lights did not work when I bought the car. The current trans has a three wire switch, the column on this car also has a two wire switch that seems to be missing a part (column switch works, but there's no "peg" attached to the steering column to actuate the switch). So my question is... what's the best way to get back-up lights working - complete the column switch, or run new wires to the switch on the trans? And where would those wires go? Much obliged for any help!

If replacing the “peg” is easy, I would go that route as wiring should still be in place. First check existing back up light circuit for shorts, and bad connections.

Second method would be to rewire using switch on transmission following diagram from later manufacture car.

The '65-'68 column-mounted switch is difficult to find, and the lever that sticks out of the column to activate it often goes missing. Take advantage of the '73 3-pin switch you now have, which serves two functions: reverse lamps and neutral-safety. Get the 3-prong socket (Standard S-747, NAPA Echlin EC-187). The centre wire is your neutral safety switch and so it should get connected to the brown wire that runs down from one of the small terminals on your starter relay. The outer two wires are your reverse lamp switch. Pull the two wires off your existing steering column-mounted switch and connect them together temporarily (paper clip? Be safe, don't let it ground out) to check and make sure the reversing lamps light up when the ignition is switched on. If so, then go ahead and extend both of these wires so each can connect to one of the two outboard wires on your new transmission-mounted combo switch and you're all set.

Mission complete! I went with the new 904 switch plan, rather than repairing the old switch system. I did not have the original lever/peg that moves the column mounted switch and it wasn't in a fun place to work without removing the column. And it was a piece of cake to connect wires to the new switch on the 904 - clipped the old plug under the dash, crimped on two new female connectors and plugged them in direct to the bulkhead connector pins C & D where I routed the two outer wires from the switch on the transmission. Problem solved! Good tip too Dan on checking the circuit first - neither of my back-up light bulbs was making a good connection. Thanks again for the tech support,
