electric supercharger

| I read that BMW will use an electric supercharger in some 2014 six cylinder models. The electric driven system has simpler plumbing than a turbo, less power drag than a belt driven supercharger. Its inline six will make more power than the V8 now does. Its a another play on the gasoline-electric hybrid theme for part time boost. Its not likely I'll see this soon at the Pick-N-Pull but it might be an option to consider in the future.

| Does said BMW also have a 54 volt electrical system? We had to go to 12V electrics in order to start high compression engines and 24V for many larger engines. Manufacturers have been working towards a 48/54V electrical system for some time and I see that as near necessity for electric supercharging.

| Many years ago, (in a universe far away), I think it was GE, was working with a A/C compressor manufacturer, to develope a "package" (self contained, like a window unit) A/C for cars. It used a variable speed compressor, that operated on, I think, 96 volts, and was pulse width modulated. If something went wrong with the unit, it was just removed, and repaired, or replaced, and reinstalled.

Ford had a 120v windshield defrost system on Lincolns in the 80s?
Separate 120v alternator.......
Im pretty sure Id run down the battery pretty fast with an eclectric supercharger....
Less plumbing and wiring with a Fogger. |

From what I read on electric superchargers....
They're electric super/turbo chargers.
The electric part is to quickly spool up the turbine, then the exhaust takes over._________________ Ed

In 1956 most manufacturers had converted to 12 volt systems. Electronics equipment manufacturers could benefit from higher voltage systems - it made some designs simpler. Motorola felt that 48 volt systems were a better compromise but the industry made do with 12 volts.
I think the BMW story was in Car and Driver. I suppose a conversion to an older vehicle could be a plug-in battery system without a high capacity alternator. Sort of like filling the NO2 bottle as needed.
When I Google'd this a common BMW report is 2 conventional turbos, plus one electric turbo.

The electric turbo/supercharger provides a quick, short boost until the 2 exhaust driven turbochargers get up to speed, thus minimalizing "turbo lag"._________________

Who cares about BMW! Can we get it to run for 12-15 seconds on a Slant 6 car? That is the real question!! Is there an article on this somewhere?

I like turboram's nitrous spool up protocol. I bet a 25 HP shot in the intake pipe of mine (after turbo and intercooler) would bring the boost to max in an instant.
