New racer being built

I went to pick up another tranny today and seen another new car that is under construction locally. It should be a real screamer when it is done. This guy has a 68 valiant street car that I saw go 10.30 at Mason Dixon 2 years ago. So he knows what fast is..!
He is now building a 66 Valiant. The car already has the motor in it and has the floor pans all welded up, frame connectors in, Rear springs moved in,new fuel tank installed, and an 8.8" rear out of a Mustang with disc brakes already in it. 17X8" wheels look right at home and fit the wheel wheels great.
The interesting thing is that the motor that is in it is going to be changed to a turbo before it hits the road. I saw the S.S. header flanges and piping that will form his header. Should be a nice ride for sure.
While it won't be at Mason Dixon next month, it may well be there in the Fall!!

I plan to get some pics later of the 8.8" swap. It would make a nice article I think. Plenty of Mustang rears in the yards for a lot less than an 8 3/4. I will get pics of the turbo setup once it's done too.

Rick,
Thanks for posting this. My racing partner and I are building a new turbo/slant six and have no experience with either, so we're always looking for new ideas and methodology. We'll be watching with much interest as you post the progress on this car.

My '72 car has been "operational" for a couple of years, now, and I have had it on a chassis dyno (445 RWHP) and it a 1,000-foot drag strip (Centerville, AR... there are NO quarter-mile drag strips in Arkansas ) where it turned 9.74 @ 105mph (that equates to about an 11.58 @ 115mph, according to Wallace online calculators.)
But, it's mainly just a street thrasher... no serious quarter mile ambitions. Those times were turned on a very cold day (no bite at all) and on 8-inch drag radials, spinning all the way through 1st gear, and with a 3.55 final drive. I have since added some 9-inch wide, "real" slicks and changed the final gearing to a 4.10. It should pick it up to a low 11-second quarter-mile time, I believe.
The slant six car, given its mechanical parametetrs, should run somewhat better than that. We'll see... talk's cheap! LOL!
Probably gonna take a couple of months to put the finishing touches on that car, but we're getting there. I'll keep the message board updated on our "progress." Lots of expeimentation down the road.... as I said, we're newbies at this slant six bidness.... and, turbos.
So... we have kind of a steep learning curve to negotiate...

Well, mechanically, it's just a bald-faced copy of the engines in Tom Wolfe's and Ryan Peterson's cars... We would still be trying to figure out how to get the head off, if not for Tom's valuable/expert advice! We had no idea, going in, how to go about procuring pistons, rods, cam specs, and a thousand other things, but Tom took us by the hand and showed us the way...
If it runs like the hammers of Hell, it's thanks to Him!
If it won't get out of its own way, it's on US... He GAVE us the information!!! 
What's the date for the Clay City race?

That's a 1,340-mile round trip for us.
Our tow vehicle will be lucky to get 12 mpg. That's 112 gallons @ $3.75 per gallon, or $420.00 for gas.
Two nights in a motel and food, and it's easily a $600.00 trip.
Seeing as how this is just a hobby racer, and I am on a "fixed income" (and it's not fixed too well,) I am truly sorry to have to pass on the Clay City slant six event. It sounds like a whale of a lot of fun, and I'm sure I'd be glad I came. But for just a little more, I can get a roller cam and lifters, I think...
Hmmmm.....
I will be watching for the results of that race, for sure!!!
Damned fuel prices are killing a lot of stuff...

Hey, If I can get two cars from Florida to Maryland (approx 1800 mi round trip), you can get one to Clay city. 
Let the cam wait till next year.

Charrlie, if I had your money, I wouldn't worry about the expense, either, but I don't... I have to watch my p's and q's or this bucket of bolts will NEVER see a starting line, ANYWHERE!!
Young guys like you don't understand, but us OLD people can't work overtime (no job; retired) to make the extra money for this high-priced gas... I'd be at Clay City if I were well fixed, too... but, I'm not.
I wish you the best of luck at that race, but just wish you'd quit rubbing it in.... not everybody has deep pockets!!! 
Your friend in Arkansas, the poorest state in the Union, I think...

Thanks, Lou! I hope ~I~ get to see it run, sometime, too!!!! We have been working on it for three (3!) years, and it's still not race-ready. Trouble is, we're both old (I'm 73 and my partner, Freddie is 74) so, it takes us forever to get anything done. To put it into perspective, I was 22 years old before Ma Mopar sold the first slant 6...
sigh...
We're finally to the point of installing the fuel system and hooking up a bunch of gauges and wiring, the drivesshaft-loop, and seat-belts and shoulder harness. The cam is already "broken in," and the "good" (340 + inner) springs are back on; we have driven the car around the block, but it still needs to go into a front-end shop for alignment, and the Cal Tracs need pre-load adjustment. The reverse-pattern 904 with the fully-manual valve body seems to work okay, at least, for now... Turbo-Action sent us a Cheetah shifter without a "gate" stop for 2nd gear, and we had to change that... one thing after another... You know the deal!
Then, I get this stinging message from Charrle-$, who apparently just doesn't understand what it's like not to be well-off... and thinks money for stuff like this grows on trees...
He'll never understand... guy$ like that never do...

| Charlie doesn't have deep pockets, they just have holes in them . He is just able to make a dollar stretch real far and just trying to encourage you im sure.
