That coil looks nice Ted, as does everything in your Swinger's engine bay.

I like the idea of being able to do without the ballast resistor, one less variable. However, my Volare has the 4 pin ballast resistor. If I bought the same coil that you have, could I do away with my ballast resistor? I can ask Pertronix, maybe it's on their website.

Thanks again!

Wes,

Yes you can do away with the resistor. Their engineers helped me with the explanation. Using their 3 onm coil is the ticket to keeping the temp down on the MOPAR ECU's. while eliminating the ballast resistor. I have a write up on it somewhere on this website. I have been running the HV Coil for a couple of years now and the coil stays luke warm most of the time. Much cooler than the old stock canister coil mounted to the bracket behind the alternator. That location and the stock coil just used to cook back there. The new cooling style design and fender location should help longevity The plugs burn very clean..

Ted, Would that be the Flame thrower HV? I do not see HEI mentioned in the text for it. But it did say it was 60,000 volts.

Yes. it is the 3 ohm version to use with a MOPAR ECU. Same coil as the HEI but in a different case for better cooling.

Quote:
When I looked up the flame thrower HV on JEGS they listed three of them: .45 ohms, 1.5 ohms and 3 ohms. What is the impact of this choice? HOw does one know which one to get?

The .45 ohm is the highest output fastest rise/recharge time of the 3 coils and generally used in high rpm motors like small blocks that turn 7 to 10,00 rpm. The 1.5 ohm is for big blocks and MSD type ignitions or the Ignitor II. The 3 ohm coil is for the Ignitor I and MOPAR ECU's with out the ballast reisitor..

Quote:
Do you think the Second Strike ignition would be a serious upgrade over a new MSD? It is almost $200 more. The specs certainly looks impressive. Does anybody discount this?

That is a nice unit. MSD's only provide multisparks below 3000 rpm or so. The second strike goes all the way up to 10,000 rpm. It would be great on a blown engine or turbo charged race motor because it keeps putting out more juice all the way up under heavy boost. I don't think you could drown it out with too rich of a mix.

Okay, I used one of those testers where one end plugs onto the spark plug, and the other end goes into the spark plug wire. The tester that lets you see the spark going into the spark plug. On #6 and #5 plug, the spark was kind of orange. I will check the others to see, but does this look like the coil? I will keep checking.
Onward...

Tested the coil, as per wjajr's instructions:

"First test: check Primary side of coil, or its low voltage circuit.
Place black VOM probe on (-) and red on (+), reading should be about 0.75 to 0.81 ohms "
results: 1.9

"Secondary side of coil, or its high voltage circuit:
Second test: change VOM Ohm scale to read 20K.
Place one probe into center hole of coil, the other on (+) terminal the reading should be 10,000 to 11,000 ohms."
results: 11.41

Is it time for a new coil?
Thanks!

Gentlemen, I'd like your insight. Originally, I didn't want to hijack this thread, so I started a new one. But no bites. Your input?....

Thanks.

"If the spark is dull yellow or "goes away" at 3/8" or so, then you can diagnose the problem."

Back again. The spark is yellowish, and i have been thinking about a Pertronix coil anyway.

The weather is warmer here, and the Volare seems to be running better. The spark plugs were fouled, so I swapped in new ones. The carb may still be running rich, and I still need to get the carb adapter sorted out. I'm almost ready, I just have to wait for a couple of days off from work.

Later guys!
