Shopping for a clutch kit for the 83 D-150

Autozone Duralast for 134.99
Sumitt Zoom MU1525-1 for 137.95
RockAuto Brute Power 90308 for 114.79

While cruising around the internet found that Precision Clutches also makes Zoom and Brute Power clutches.

I called the Tech Support at Precision got lucky and got a tech that is also a Dodge truck fan.

found out that the Zoom MU1525-1 and the Brute Force 90308 have exactly the same bill of materials,, same part, for different $
Per the Tech, these are very much OEM clutches. Also found out that Precision is in process of taking over the Autozone clutch business,, transitioning in everything east of the Rocky's now.

The Tech really recommended a diaphragm pressure plate over the finger style,, but they do not have a diaphragm style that fits the small slant flywheel.

regards
DT

Are you looking for a 10" or 9.25" clutch assy? You should be trying to buy the most expensive one, although those prices are almost equivalent. My wild guess is that Zoom will be better than the others...

John, I had no luck with stor bought clutches for the slant..

Go with a 10" fo' sho.. and see if there is a local independent clutch rebuilder that will work with you on your clutch..

I got one for the dart and the Duster from a local guy who has since retired...Sad I need to find me another good local guy to do my clutches now.

He would make me the 10 Plates with lots of clamping pressure and a 10' slant disc with kevlar pucks on both sides..

40,000 + suburban stop and go street miles on the duster clutch and no issues yet..

just my $.02

I would think in the metro Indy area you can find 10 good clutch guys in the local phone book! Hell use matt Hagan's guy! LOL.

good luck,

Greg

My last over the counter clutch was a Zoom 9 1/4" and it was a good quality piece (5-6 years back)....The organic disc was able to withstand quite a few hyperpak launches until it finally withered (but still was fine street driving for months after that).

Sorry i can't comment on the 10", I just avoid that one because of several explosion incidents (both from board members and some local mopar guys).

Good Luck,

I'm glad this topic came up. Cool

So lately I've been hammering the crap out of my Valiant and frequently manually inducing oversteer and the clutch is beginning to protest.

What's the best off the shelf clutch assembly?

It's a '68 and later slant with a passenger car bell and 23 spline A833 if that matters...

Is there any new updates from people using the Spec clutches.

Sure wish McLeod would make one to fit. The custom set-up in Ryan's Dart has worked flawless for at least 5 years. And it has been hammered hard!!!

Likely not all that relevant, as it's not a street application, but I've had a six puck Spec in my HAMBster for a couple seasons now.
I had to re-engineer it some to get it to work well (and finally got it), but that could've been due to my specific usage.

Also, I'm not sure they're even still doing slant application units.

Spec still makes them, but it's not a large market so you have to call. For daily drving light car the Stage 2 is OK, I had some slipping problems after a day at the drags. One duster has a Stage 3 and is yet to go to the track, the other car is getting a stage 4-six finger puck without springs to see if that will stand up to moderate track use and still hold. I believe one of our members tryed a Stage 5 to find it didn't hold up, so they offered a new setup but you need to sen them your flywheel to be redrilled.

The only other 'stocker' option is having a truck NP435 bellhousing modified to take the 4 speed/5 speed tranny and use a big block 11" clutch (and do some modification of your tranny tunnel to make the bellhousing fit in a car).

I had the stage 5 clutch setup stock size disc if i remeber correctly, I'd say 99% it failed because the trans started leaking and oiled the clutch down which caused the slip, the leak started after I forgot to pop the pilot bearing back into the crank Embarassed . My new clutch is way more streetable and holds way more power, sent my flywheel to spec redrilled it for the 9.5inch clutch stage 3+ or it could just be a stage 3 but it's rated for like 580hp. I actually just cut my under the dash spring off yesterday and removed a helper spring on the clutch fork so now it's a 10 times easier to drive without all the springs messing with the pedal feel.

Kevin, refresh our memory. What is the 9 1/2" PP out of?

My 9,5" Spec stage 3+ is just ”custom kit" they made. I had to redrill flywheel.

Ya Jeremy didn't tell me it's either custom or he wanted to keep it under wraps what engine it came from i guess? Does something nissan sound familar? I swear that rings a bell if anything was mentioned about my clutches origins.

Last weekend's race allowed me a few passes to 'flog' the Spec Stage 4 clutch... (six finger "puck" no spring hub)

It held and performed well...even with a set of 275 Nitto Drag radials behind it with the 6000 rpm clutch dump...(Mike B said i lagged at the line on that one, i think due to the tires scratching a bit).

No fade, and once it engaged it was "on"...

Will have to post as I get more runs on the car.

May need to get some slicks to gummy up, if I start off at the top of the clock.
