leak under dash

on both the drivers side and passengers side, water is leaking under the dash onto the carpet. this happens if the car is left sitting out in the rain.
i know, don't leave it in the rain, but sometimes i have to.
i have heard the wiper mount area could be the problem but i cant tell.

What car do you have?

I have had problems with my windscreen rubber deteriorating and you could also have rust issues around that area which could be leaking. It could be from the top of your windscreen and water running along down the sides etc as well.

Is your cowl blocked? (get a hose and run water down it, if water doesn't come out behind your front tyres you need to clean it out).

I am assuming it's not your heater box since it's water and not coolant.

Do you have a blower/fan which has access to the cowl? I have had a leak around here before.

And yes the wiper mount area can be a problem too, if you do a search you will find information on how to change those seals.

Your car probably has all of the problems Brussell mentions. Wiper seal kit comes from Schuhmacher (poorly-organised site; mouse around until you find them). Replacement windshield gasket source (and availability) depends on exactly what car you have, and you can count on finding rust to fix after removing the old gasket and before installing the new one (which must be done with Bedding & Glazing Compound).
