How many of you racers run 40 or 50 wt engine oil in the rear end of your drag car instead of 85W140 Hypoid stuff?

I have talked to romeo about this But I haven't tried it yet.. I don't want to blow anything up.. or shear gears or anything dumb like that.

I have heard stories about some guys doing this...

I was just curious..

Thoughts / discussions welcome

Greg

There are many engineered "lite" gear oils made for this application...
Redline has a few different ones.

Spool or SG?

I have seen quite a few people run ATF when they have a spool.

Not sure I would go that thin, but it works for them.

Say,
The 50 wt crankcase oil is in the same viscosity range as the 90 wt gear oil. They rate them differently to get the different #'s. Confusing but true. Running the 75w90 would be a good choice. I see Redline's Superlite is just a 75w90. I've heard the same stories about ATF in rear-ends but never tried it. The ATF (10-20wt) would fall into the 75-80 wt class in gear oils. Good luck
Later,
Ryan

this is one of my secrets of a race car that can stay dialed in. My car with the stock engine i used ------ in the rearend racers said you can not do this. I can do what i want to in my race car. With the Bruner race engine I use ------- in the rear end . It is not so much I would tell but it is about the performance and dependable that I have had and that is what it is worth. I can tell you what I have used and what i now use at the Banquit. Thanks Ron Very Happy

I bought a Duster in the mid '80s that had ATF in the diff along with 6.17 gears.

In My case this would be with a spool.

No sure grip or clutches of any kind.

I want to try to achieve some oil / weight / viscosity between cold runs and hot ones..

THe cold runs the car is a bit slower so If at a race the car sits looooong between rounds or is just cold it slows down sometimes a tenth. Sad

I've seen many of the faster cars (You know, the Big Dogs) running their cars up on jack stands before a pass to warm up the trans and rear...

Yes I have done this and it does help, but it's not the same as a 105 mph blast down the 1/4 Mile At times rear gear temps after a run are 105* and then quickly cooll back to 85-60* running on a jack somtimes gets it back up to 90*..

Drink heavily and pass out early? Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Greg, it does help consistency to make a long trip to staging after you sit for awhile. If you get held up in staging it's best to dial down a little.
