I have a rebuilt tranny ready to go in my Dart but I want ti pre-diagnose the old one so I can make sure I correct the problem. When I start out in Drive, it shifts 1,2,3,2, and stays in 2nd, no matter how fast I go. It only stays in 3rd for less than a second. I am thinking maybe a stuck governor. Any other ideas on what I should be looking for?

By all means,do the factory pressure tests first. Did this trans always have this problem,or did it just start one day? Does it work OK in reverse? I agree, it sounds like a governer or valve body problem

You need a 300psi pressure guage connected to the pressure test ports on the trans. It could be governor- pressure should increase steadily with vehicle speed. My bet is on a valve body problem.
