Hi from new (old) guy

Just want to say hi & introduce myself and also thank the forum for allowing me to join. I need much help with slant 6's. I have had many Mopars since early 70's but all have been v-8's. Prior to that (60's) I was pretty much a GM guy with occasional Mopars. My Pop converted from Packard's to Plymouth's around 1957 so we'd give each other a hard time.
Last year I converted my 63 sport fury cv to a Slant 225, from the original 383hp motor as it's my dedicated 'driver' to fun events. We love to travel and my old 6bbl roadrunner just doesn't get very good mileage. The Slant 6 has worked great but it was an old, tired motor & I now have several parts motors that I'm going to try & make one fresh one from. I did acquire a 2bbl intake that I'll be converting to a tbi unit in the future, after I get a good motor put together. And, I need help so I'll be on the engine forum, real soon! Thank you in advance for your help!
Rex

Welcome! Glad you're here!
There are a million good hints here, and many folks that will be happy to assist you in your build.
Regarding TBI: Some have done it. I won't say it's a bad thing, but my impression is that there isn't much to be gained by it. You end up with a great "mixer" at one end of the manifold, but still have all the issues of fuel distribution to battle with. Gains in economy and power tend to be small for TBI slants.
That's my $.02. Wiser and more experienced slanters may have a better take on TBI than myself.
In all slant projects... have fun!

Welcome! Sounds like a fun project. I have quite a bit of TBI experience on my '64 Dart, and it will likely be worth it if you use a megasquirt or some laptop-tunable ECU.
For a mild/medium motor, I would use a 2bbl Holley TBI from a GM 4.3L V6, or something similar. Maybe a Mopar (Holley TBI also) 3.9L 2bbl. I am contemplating doing this on my new '64 Valiant driver.
Yes, MP-EFI is better, but the TBI will allow more tunability than any carburetor, if you set it up right.

Welcome here! Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Remember the mechanical tappets will require periodic valve adjustment. Until you change over to fuel injection, Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.
Sure, port fuel injection is the best, but TBI with good hardware and software is definitely going to give you better driveability and mileage than a carburetor. There are no such giant big mixture distribution problems with the slant-6 as there are on other inline-6 engines with their log/rake type intakes. Some thought and effort will address the relatively minor such issues; rather than using the factory 2bbl intake, you would likely do better to modify a 1bbl intake into a parallel 2bbl setup. Photo documentation of a very well done such conversion is here.
As for hardware: Having lived with the pathetic Mopar TBI system ('88-'91 Dodge trucks and vans, 3.9/5.2/5.9) on my '89 D100 318, I would definitely not select any part of it for retrofitment. Its hardware and firmware/software are poorly designed, halfassed and primitive. If I were going to the effort to retrofit TBI, I would use GM hardware -- adaptor plates are readily available and there's a wide range of injectors to get whatever flow rate you need -- and a reprogrammed GM computer (you can do that with the GM computers, but not with the Mopar ones). See discussion here, here, here, and here. Dart270's hardware suggestions (GM 4.3 V6) are good. You might experiment with a factory 4.3 computer, either stock or rechipped, before investing the time and money in Megasquirt or similar. You will want to use a late-model exhaust manifold that has a threaded port for you to install an O2 sensor, which enables closed-loop operation key to efficiency with fuel injection (or at least the rear half of a late-model exhaust manifold…see Dutra Duals).
Adding a vehicle speed sensor is easy; a NAPA Echlin VSS-232 (or equivalent) can simply be placed in line with the speedo cable:

Thank you for the welcomes. I'm going over to the picture section to see if I can figure out how to post some of the SF.
The reason I'm considering the tbi is twofold. I've done several 4's & v-8' already, using factory ecm/sensors/tbi's, usually gm and the second is I'm only going for fuel mileage, not really a power increase. Also, it's pretty easy to convert to tbi!

Welcome Rex.
Hey Dan,
the NAPA Echlin VSS-232 hasn't been available for several years. It crosses to an early '80 Buick with cruise. I struck out with the other parts store chains and had no luck at three different You-Pull-It yards for a used one. I was wanting one to signal my aftermarket cruise, ended up with the magnets on the driveshaft. Do you know of any others?

Welcome Rex. I am eager to see your 63 Sport Fury. Had a friend with one back when new.
