We had our first band concert last Sunday afternoon at a local retirement home. We started to warm up, which usually lasts about 20 minutes, then the clarinet started playing the tuning note, and everybody followed suit and started playing the tuning note to tune up. By this time a fairly large crowd had assembled which was waiting for music. The director took the podium to direct a tune up scale, which is our normal practice, and about 2 notes into the scale a lady up front let out a blood curdling scream and covered her ears. I mean it was a top of the lungs, full-throat, as loud as she could scream. Someone quickly wheeled her out of the room. We guessed that maybe her hearing aid had malfunctioned, but if you could disregard the pain the lady was obviously in, it was pretty funny. I leaned over to the horn player next to me and whispered, "I hope she was not the critic for the local paper".
I don't think I ever before played in a band that caused someone to scream in agony. Oh well,we only lost one.
Anyone out there ever have a similar experience?

Wow, that's a new one on me. You should consider that an accomplishment - generation of a reaction!

Someone else suggested maybe she was an old Beatles fan and thought she was supposed to scream at concerts.

| I shared this with a band-geek friend of mine. He suggested feedback like this could occur. He knows someone whose hearing aide makes a noise the wearer isn't aware of but is painful to the people in the area. If a particular note caused feedback that the wearer could actually hear, it would be not so good for the wearer.
